Honorary Degree Recipients

paul j. birmingham 

Founder, Catholic Schools Foundation 

Doctor of Humanitarian Service 

Paul J. Birmingham’s vision and generosity have made it possible for thousands of needy 

children to attend Catholic elementary and secondary schools in Boston. 

In 1983, recognizing that private philanthropy was needed to support Catholic schools, 

Mr. Birmingham partnered with Rev. Thomas V. Daily to found the St. Anthony 

Scholarship Fund to assist needy families in paying tuition for their children. 

The organization’s name was changed in 1989 to the Catholic Schools Foundation. Since 

its inception, it has expanded thirty-fold, raising more than $100 million to support 

Catholic education in the Archdiocese of Boston. Its signature program, The Inner- 

City Scholarship Fund, allows thousands of children in high-poverty neighborhoods to 

receive partial scholarships to attend Catholic schools in the archdiocese without regard 

for race, religion, national origin, or gender. 

More recently, Mr. Birmingham, who continues to serve on the foundation’s Board of 

Trustees, challenged the organization to reach out to immigrant Hispanics by funding 

the Hispanic Recruitment Initiative, making Catholic education possible for an underserved 

population. 

His family foundation, The Birmingham Foundation, also supports Catholic causes, 

including the new Pope John Paul II High School in Hyannis, Mass., where he serves 

on the advisory board. 

A golfer and bicyclist, Mr. Birmingham was severely injured six years ago in a head-first 

fall that left him wheelchair bound. Guided by his strong Catholic faith, he has battled 

back with rehabilitation and physical therapy and now is able to walk assisted by a walker. 

Mr. Birmingham, a native of Boston, entered Providence College as a member of the 

Class of 1963. Though he did not complete his degree, he always has been considered a 

class member by his classmates. 

Mr. Birmingham has sold and developed real estate in Florida and on Cape Cod, where 

he resides with his wife, Pamela. They are the parents of three sons.

Assistant Professor of Education 

Doctor of Education 

Dr. Louise J. Buonomano ’76g has served as a nursing professional and educator for 

more than 50 years. 

A native of Havre de Grace, Md., Dr. Buonomano became a registered nurse in 1954 

after completing her studies at St. Agnes School of Nursing in Baltimore. She worked as a 

surgical nurse at a veterans hospital in Havre de Grace; as a staff nurse at the U.S. Marine 

Hospital in Baltimore; and as a special-care nurse at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. 

After moving to Rhode Island with her husband, Dr. Vito D. Buonomano ’53 & ’76g, 

who will receive an honorary doctorate in public service, she worked as a coronary 

surgical nurse specialist at St. Joseph Hospital and Miriam Hospital. While raising five 

children, she earned a bachelor’s degree in school health education from Rhode Island 

College in 1971, a master’s degree in education from Providence College in 1976, and a 

doctorate in health education from Boston University in 1979. 

Dr. Buonomano was a charge nurse in the medical-surgical unit at the Veterans Hospital 

in Providence and an instructor at Our Lady of Fatima School of Nursing. She joined 

the faculty at the Henry Barnard Laboratory School at Rhode Island College as a nurse 

teacher in 1977 and became an assistant professor of education in 1989, a position she 

held until her retirement. Her academic research specialties included ADHD, adolescent 

behavior, and health education. 

Dr. Buonomano was an active member of many service and advocacy organizations, 

including the Governor’s Council on Health Care Facilities and the Catholic Bishop’s 

Biomedical Ethics Committee. 

As supporters of PC, Dr. Buonomano and her husband have contributed to the 

Concannon Fitness Center construction; established an endowed scholarship in memory 

of the Dominican Fathers; and are members of the Harkins Society. They also have 

supported St. Mary’s Home for Children in North Providence.

Dentist 

Doctor of Public Service 

The life and career of Dr. Vito D. Buonomano ’53 & ’76g exemplify the mission and 

values of Providence College. 

A dentist and dental consultant for more than five decades until his retirement, Dr. 

Buonomano also is a real estate professional who has written numerous journal articles on 

the topics of dentistry, real estate, and finance. Throughout his career, he has generously 

devoted his time, energy, and resources to helping disadvantaged children and to benefiting 

the Providence College community. 

A Providence native and the son of immigrants, Dr. Buonomano worked for his father’s 

construction business while earning a degree in biology from PC. He received a doctorate 

from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1957 and served as a captain in the U.S. 

Army Dental Corps from 1957-1959. 

While raising his five children, Dr. Buonomano volunteered in the community and 

advanced his professional studies. He earned an M.B.A. from PC in 1976, attended the 

Boston University Graduate School of Dentistry from 1976-1978, and received a master’s 

degree in biomedical engineering at Brown University in 1978. As a real estate broker, he 

has managed a number of properties. 

Dr. Buonomano and his wife, Dr. Louise J. Buonomano ’76g, who will receive an honorary 

doctorate in education, have been steadfast supporters of PC’s alumni activities and 

building campaigns. The Buonomanos contributed to the Concannon Fitness Center 

construction; established an endowed scholarship in memory of the Dominican Fathers; 

and are members of the Harkins Society. 

For 50 years, Dr. Buonomano has worked in various capacities to help the children at 

St. Mary’s Home for Children in North Providence, R.I., including serving as a member 

and officer of its board of directors and establishing a scholarship. He is a charter member 

of the 1877 Society.

Doctor of Business Administration 

It is fitting that Providence College’s signature building will carry the name of Michael 

A. Ruane ’71, whose contributions and service to the College were unmatched in the 

past decade. 

Mr. Ruane stepped down in February as chair of the PC Board of Trustees, a position he 

held since 2002. He also served on the Board Affairs Committee and the Development 

and Alumni Affairs Committee, and chaired the Executive Committee. 

In 2011, Mr. Ruane and his wife, Elizabeth, provided the leadership gift for the Ruane 

Center for the Humanities, the College’s signature academic building under construction 

on campus. When it opens this fall, it will house the Development of Western Civilization 

Program, Liberal Arts Honors Program, Department of English, and Department of History. 

Mr. Ruane also has donated to the Ruane Atrium of the Concannon Fitness Center, 

supported the women’s ice hockey team, and established an endowed chair, the Michael 

A. Ruane Endowed Chair for Innovation in Business Education, in the PC School of 

Business. The Ruanes are Platinum Torchbearers in the 1917 Society, reflecting gifts to 

PC in excess of $1 million, and members of the Harkins Society, having included the 

College in their estate plans. 

A successful businessman, Mr. Ruane is the owner, chairman, and managing partner of 

TA Associates Realty, a company he founded in Boston in 1982 that has become one 

of the largest real estate investment advisory firms in the nation. Prior to that, he was a 

partner at TA Associates, one of the first and oldest venture capital firms in the country. 

Mr. Ruane is chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Advent Realty Funds, 

one of the largest private real estate investment trusts. He served as a limited partner in 

Media Communications, a money manager investing in communications companies, 

and is a former chairman of J-PAC LLC and Medipharm Manufacturing Group. Mr. 

Ruane also served on the Board and Executive Committee of Northeast Health System. 

Mr. Ruane received a bachelor’s degree in economics from PC and an M.B.A. in finance 

from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the Allied 

Chemical Foundation Fellow. He also has a master’s degree in taxation and is a certified 

public accountant. He has lectured at Harvard Business School. In 1997, the Boston 

University Graduate School of Management presented him with an entrepreneurial award.

bring millions around the world to a better understanding of the Catholic Church.

Founder, Word on Fire Catholic Ministries 

Rector, Mundelein Seminary, and President, University of St. Mary of the Lake 

Doctor of Religious Education 

An author, speaker, and theologian, Father Barron founded Word on Fire Catholic 

Ministries, a global media ministry. His 10-part documentary series, Catholicism, which 

he hosted and created with producer Michael Leonard ’70 & ’00 Hon. and director 

Matt Leonard ’93, received a 2012 Christopher Award for excellence. Airing on PBS and 

EWTN and shown by parishes and universities throughout the world, the series was commended 

for its exploration of “the history, beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church 

through insightful spiritual commentary and breathtaking visuals of artistic treasures.” 

Father Barron, a native of Chicago, is rector of Mundelein Seminary and president of the 

University of St. Mary of the Lake, the major seminary and school of theology for the 

Archdiocese of Chicago. Ordained in 1986, he was appointed to the theological faculty 

of Mundelein Seminary in 1992. He has been a visiting professor at the University of 

Notre Dame and at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. He was 

twice a scholar-in-residence at the Pontifical North American College at the Vatican. 

Father Barron holds a master’s degree in philosophy from The Catholic University of 

America and a doctorate in sacred theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris. 

He is an on-air contributor and analyst for NBC News in New York and a commentator 

for the Chicago Tribune, FOX News, CNN, EWTN, Our Sunday Visitor, The Catholic 

Herald in London, and Catholic News Agency. 

Among his many books are Eucharist (Orbis Books, 2008), Word on Fire: Proclaiming 

the Power of Christ (The Crossroad Publishing Co., 2008), and The Priority of Christ: 

Toward a Postliberal Catholicism (Brazos Press, 2007). Thomas Aquinas: Spiritual Master 

(The Crossroad Publishing Co., 1996) was awarded a first prize for spirituality by the 

Catholic Press Association. 

In addition, Father Barron has written essays and DVD programs, and his articles on 

theology and the spiritual life appear in online and print journals. His new documentary, 

Catholicism: The New Evangelization, will be released this year.
