1902 Figures in the Lower Corners 6d imperforate colour trial single in mauve on thin ungummed<br />

unwatermarked paper BW #Q42(DP)1C, minor thinning at top, Cat $3000. Ex the "Chapman"<br />

Collection (1920s) and Colonel Harrie Evans: whose "set" of five colours sold for $8400 at our auction<br />

of 4/5/2002. [All of the recorded proofs have a small-part of the adjoining unit at top clearly showing<br />

part of the inscription 'TWO PENCE']{Page 80.3}<br />

1897-1908 Figures in Four Corners 9d colour-trial pair in deep brown-purple on gummed Crown/Q<br />

paper defaced with a ruled line in red ink BW #Q43(E)1Ba, very lightly mounted, Cat $5000+.<br />

Unissued value in this series. Ex The "Chapman" Collection (1920s) and Colonel Harrie Evans.<br />

Prepared in early-1903 to comply with the new basic telegram rate of 9d, but rejected in favour of the<br />

"Uniform" 9d design proposed by Postmaster-General Drake that was adopted by only New South<br />

Wales & Queensland. This is therefore a very significant item for the Commonwealth of Australia<br />

collector. Similar pairs in yellow-orange, slate-purple - one pulled perf - & coral-pink sold for $2875,<br />

$3335 and $3910 in our auctions of 12/5/2007, 1/9/2007 & 9/2/2008 respectively. Our vendor believes<br />

this pair, which is the item illustrated at page 1/90 of the ACSC, is the finest and most attractive of the<br />

six different pairs recorded.{Page 80.4}<br />
