Page: 56 Prestige Philately - The Sixth International Rarities Auction May 24, 2008 Lot Type Grading Description Est $A NEW SOUTH WALES Lot 161 160 G/F B 161 P B Lot 160 1850-51 Sydney Views Plate IV Stout Yellowish Vertically Laid Paper 2d ultramarine SG 34 block of 4, margins close to just shaved, minor staining, four light strikes of the Reversed Barred Numeral '6' of St Mary's, Cat £680++. Ex Victor Frankenstein. A great rarity, this block is considered by some to be one of the highlights of the Frankenstein Collection. (In the catalogue for that sale, the block was erroneously described as being "rebacked", which it is not.) Multiples of the Laid Paper stamps are extremely scarce, and this is probably the largest recorded multiple. There were no multiples in the Slade-Slade, Wiggins, "Espana", White or Rivett-Carnac Collections. Judge Hamilton (1958) had a pair in ultramarine, Dale-Lichtenstein had an unused pair, the "Manwood" Collection included a horizontal strip of 3 in the Prussian blue shade SG 35, and Frankenstein had a pair in Prussian blue (wrongly described as ultramarine).{Page 56.1} 1851-53 Laureates 6d imperforate plate proof in dark brown on thick wove paper, margins close to good except where slightly cut-into at upper-right, very minor thin on the reverse. [The vendor states this is the only example of which he is aware]{Page 56.2} 10,000 1,250 162 P A Ex Lot 162 1854-59 Large Diadem c.1902 reprinted die proofs of Design C with blank value tablets comprising, in orange-red on white; in vermilion on pink & on green; in green on yellow; and in purple on green, on pink & on yellow. A very colourful group. Ex Mann, Ginger, Carleton Jones and Sir Gawaine Baillie: sold, with a duplicate of the vermilion on green, for $2300 in July 2005.{Page 56.3} (7) 2,500

[Basset Hull at page 384 details the early specimen stamps, giving the dates of "issue" and numbers produced. The Registered stamp seems to have been something of an aberration. Of it he states only "I have found no entry as to its printing"]{Page 57.1} 750 164 G A Lot 164 Lot 165 1871-1902 Wmk '36' De La Rue 1d horizontal pair Imperforate Vertically SG 207a, indistinct Rays cancellation, Cat £1200. Ex Frankenstein. {Page 57.4} 165 G B/A - De La Rue 2d horizontal pair Imperforate Vertically SG 209b, separated a little untidily and just touching the design at upper-left, indistinct Rays cancellation, signed by Bloch. Unpriced in Gibbons. Ex Frankenstein. Believed to be the only recorded pair in private hands: there is a pair in the Royal Collection.{Page 57.5} 7,500 6,000 166 P A Lot 166 - Extracts 1890 Allegorical Figure 2½d imperforate colour trials in black, in purple-brown, in blue and in carmine all on ungummed unwatermarked paper and affixed to small pieces of card (90x70mm approx). Ex John White and Sir Gawaine Baillie.{Page 57.6} 167 P A - 2½d Perf 11x12 plate proof in deep blue-black on ungummed but watermarked paper. Ex John White and Sir Gawaine Baillie.{Page 57.3} 168 P A 1891 Surcharges 1d grey imperforate plate proof marginal pair from the right of the sheet on ungummed unwatermarked wove paper.
