1915 stampless cover to the Red Cross in Switzerland endorsed "from C Lirch [?] prisoner of War<br />

Hobart/Tasmania" & countersigned "Alan Cruickshank capt/oc Internment Camp" on the reverse,<br />

Hobart cds of 16JY15 & 'CH 1/[crown]/PASSED BY/CENSOR' h/s also of Hobart in blue.<br />

This is the first World War I POW item we have recorded from Tasmania. Emery states that camps<br />

were established at Claremont, a Hobart suburb, and on Bruny Island.{Page 53.1}<br />

1933 philatelic cover from United States with a largely superb strike of the rare 'UNCLAIMED/<br />

THURSDAY ISLAND' handstamp on the face, minor repaired tear at left.{Page 53.2}<br />

1940 (Nov 22) commercial cover to Ocean Island with AIF 2d tied by Melbourne cds. Carried aboard<br />

the "SS Triona" which was captured by the German raiders "Komet" & "Orion" on 6/12/1940 some 220<br />

miles from Nauru. The ship was sunk. The passengers were released, with the mailbags, on Emirau<br />

Island (New Guinea) on 21/12/1940. Returned to Sydney (b/s of 23JA41) where endorsed "Raider<br />

Mail" in red on the face, and forwarded to Ocean Island with arrival backstamp of 11MAR41, some<br />

staining from the ordeal.{Page 53.3}<br />
