Page: 116 Prestige Philately - The Sixth International Rarities Auction May 24, 2008 Lot Type Grading Description Est $A NEW ZEALAND 354 P A Lot 354 - Extract 1855 Chalons Perkins Bacon die proof of the portrait and surrounds only, in black on very thick paper (89x125mm). [Most of the other undenominated die proofs we have seen have been of a fuller half-length portrait, on a plain background. The design here is as used for the New Zealand stamps, with an engine-turned background]{Page 116.1} 2,500 Ex Lot 355 355 P A/B 1855 Large Star 1d and 1/- imperforate plate proof blocks of 14 (7x2) and 2d plate proof block of 16 (8x2 from the lower-right corner of the sheet), in black on ungummed unwatermarked wove paper, full margins despite the haphazard laying-down of the plates, the 1d block a bit stained at left. Ex Ellot, "Yeroc" and Manning who states "Only one sheet of 120 printed of each value". An important group, being proofs of the original three values, and a "must have" for the serious collector or exhibitor. [NB: these are the original Perkins Bacon proofs, NOT the much later Hausberg Reprints.
