Lot 316
1857-59 Hillman Lithographs Imperforate 6d golden-bronze SG 17, margins just shaved (at top) to
large with a fragment of the unit at left, excellent metallic lustre, Cat £1600. RPSofV Certificate (2006).
[Cecil Walkley made a scientific study of the ink used in this issue and distinguished individual subjects
on the basis of the presence - SG 17 18 & 22 - or absence - SG 19 & 23 - of microscopic metallic
particles. Under x-ray fluorescence, the so-called "bronze" ink is revealed as "gilding metal" or brass,
with a copper:zinc ratio of 85:15. Dr Walkley's premium-grade example sold for $7762 at our auction of
14/4/2005]{Page 100.3}
316 F C/B - Imperforate 6d black-bronze SG 18 horizontal pair, margins clear to large except at left where very
slightly cut-into, the right-hand unit with a Major Transfer Flaw (Void Corner at Upper-Right), tied to a
small piece by two neat strikes of the void-grid cancellation of Perth, a horizontal crease has caused
some surface damage especially to the left-hand unit though the appearance is still fine. A major rarity,
being the largest recorded multiple of this stamp. Ex Daneswood. RPSofV Certificate (2008).
Only two other multiples of the Hillman 6d are recorded, a pair in grey-black, and a pair in
golden-bronze (with the corners clipped) on a cover. It should be noted that this item is of an obviously
"bronzed" shade with significant metallic flecks in the ink. There was some discussion as to whether it
qualified as a "golden" bronze.{Page 100.4}
