1. All of us at Prestige Philately are proud to present to you the catalogue for our
Sixth International Rarities Auction. As is the standard for our Rarities Auctions,
no expense has been spared in presenting philately as art, with some 98% of
the lots illustrated - many enlarged up to three or four times actual size. On this
occasion we have made a feature of including numerous subsidiary images:
enlargements of plate numbers, varieties, backstamps etc. Where it makes
sense to do so, we have presented extracts, rather than entire items. We’re sure
you will agree that this makes the catalogue even more user-friendly and a more
valuable reference work.
2. I’ve made the point before that all our Rarities Auctions have been
characterized by being completely different from one another. Last year, the
Australian section was relatively modest and the sale was built around a three
exceptional Australian Colonies properties, namely Bernie Manning’s
Queensland, Harry Lower’s South Australia, and Trevor Davis’ Destination Mails.
The year before we had a spectacular array of magnificent Kangaroos and
wonderful Victorian Postal History.
Rarities #6 is perhaps remarkable for the balance achieved between Australian
Commonwealth (156 lots), and the Australian Colonies (166 lots), with a healthy
63 lots in the Rest of the World section.
3. We kick things off with a book that every collector should want to own, and a
couple of quirky space-exploration items. The Australia includes a number of
quite sensational rarities, the most noteworthy being Tim Rybak’s incredible and
unique Plate Number block of our unissued 1956 3½d Olympics stamp. A group
of “fresh as a daisy” die proofs are sure to be popular, as will be our two Aussie
feature sections: the “Blamire” Collection of Bicolour Kangaroos; and the
Sydney Harbour Bridge Large Gold Medal exhibit formed by former Australia
Post Chairman Maurice Williams.
4. The second section of the sale is, of course, “Australian Colonies”. We have
been able to assemble a truly eclectic mix of classic stamps, rare proof material,
and exceptional postal history from a surprising number of different vendors. All
six “States” have their notable features but New South Wales is especially strong
with the inclusion of another excellent competitive exhibit, Dr Jim Johnstone’s
study of the 1888 Centennial Issue. It should be noted that this was the first
commemorative stamp set in the world and Jim’s collection is thus a
philatelically important study.
I must also make mention here of a wonderful historical letter of 1826, which is
the earliest mail in private hands from the Northern Territory, when it was
still part of New South Wales. Lot 238 contains a spell-binding account of the
short-lived settlement at Fort Dundas on Melville Island. I’m sure everyone will
be captivated by this marvellous item and the story behind it.
5. From the “Rest of the World” we have some truly magnificent stamps from
Great Britain, New Zealand and Norfolk Island, and stupendous covers, notably
one of the few fine Fiji Times Express covers, an exceptional Papal States
franking to Australia, and an amazing item from India to the Holy Land but
missent to Labuan!

Prestige Philately - The Sixth International Rarities Auction May 24, 2008
6. If this is the first time you have seen one of our rarities catalogues, you may be surprised that many items
are priced at less than $1000, some even below $500. Well, “rarity” is a factor of supply, not demand. There
are numerous modestly priced items that are surprisingly elusive. By including such material in a sale of this
calibre we are sending a couple of strong messages: firstly, there is a lot of excellent material that is
significantly undervalued in the marketplace; and, secondly, you don’t have to be wealthy to participate in a
Prestige Philately Rarities Auction. We would like to think that none of our clients feel disenfranchised by this
type of auction.
7. Despite recent ructions in the financial and housing markets, we see little sign of philatelists retracting their
horns. Apart from the fact that the market is being driven by genuine collectors (rather than investors or
speculators), there is clearly more confidence in stamps than in many other fields. The British, European
and American markets are all consistently reporting exceptional results. And it’s the same in Australia.
If there is one area of concern for us it is that most of our American clients seem to have panicked over the
declining value of the “greenback”. Instead of simply adjusting their bidding to reflect the current exchange
rates, they have apparently decided to spend their money only in the home market. That’s fine if you collect
US material, but if Australasia is your thing, it’s a policy that will deny access to the best material which, of
course, is right here.
All of us in Australia who have been in the market for more than a few years know that exchange rates are
just one factor of buying overseas. Even when our dollar has been languishing in the economic doldrums -
and that’s for most of the last 20 years! - we have always been able to buy material in England and the
States. The boot may be on the other foot at the moment but the US dollar is still worth more than the
Aussie dollar. So, come on all you good people in the US of A, be bold and get back in the game. By all
means adjust your bids to what you would be prepared to pay locally but don’t deny yourselves the
opportunities to purchase the great material in our Sixth International Rarities Auction.
8. Finally, another note that mostly affects our American friends. Receiving good bidsheets after a sale is
disappointing for all concerned. For our last auction, clients in Seattle and San Francisco both had their
correctly addressed bidsheets missent to Belgrade Nevada. Good work USPS, I don’t think! Please,
please, PLEASE! Don’t trust your precious bids to the increasing incompetence of postal
administrations that couldn’t care less if your mail arrives on time or even at all.
Every auction we are receiving a higher proportion of bids directly from the internet, or by e-mail. By taking
advantage of this technology, you will automatically be advised that we have received your bids. You will
also be told if your bids have been exceeded; and you will receive your results immediately after an auction.
If you don’t have a computer, the fax is a highly reliable option, and much cheaper than the post. Bottom
line, don’t take the risk that the post office will get your bids to us in time. They have a lousy record, and you
don’t want to be their next victim.
9. We’re all very happy with the content of this sale, and most appreciative of our vendors from around the
globe for placing their confidence in Prestige Philately to find new homes for their treasures.
10. Anyway, I’ve rambled long enough. Please accept our invitation to peruse this catalogue as often as you
like in the next couple of weeks. Your participation as a bidder is invited and valued. Whether or not you are
able to attend the sale, we want to assure you of our commitment to making your experiences at Prestige
Philately wholly rewarding and enjoyable.

Understandin our Symbols & Unique Gradin System
At Prestie Philately we utilise much the same symbols as other firms, but with some additional categories that you should be aware of. We are the only
major firm in the world that actually grades the quality of the material we offer. While some clients have struggled with the whole concept of grading, most
have clearly embraced the idea and we receive much favourable comment about the system. It is important that you understand our Grading System because
the symbols used form part of the lot description. We are confident that once you are comfortable with our gradings, you will always be satisfied with the
quality of the material you purchase from us. And, in the event that we have missed a tear or a thin and consequently overgraded an item, we WANT you to
return it. We stand behind the Prestie Grading System.
1. Firstly, we have the lot number. If it is in bold and printed in bright red, the item is illustrated: e.g. 1234. (The actual location of the illustration is
given at the end of the description: e.g. {Page 41.8} is position 8 on page 41.)
2. The second column contains a symbol, which represents the item(s) in the lot:
** Mint, unmounted o.g. * Mint, mounted o.g.
Ω Unused, no gum Δ Piece
C Cover or card PS Postal Stationery
CL Cover, long CX Cover, oversize
A Albums and accessories B Booklet
E Essay L Literature
P Proof R Reprint
S Stamp (“Postmarks” lots)
or, in the case of used stamps, a grading of the cancellation:
V Neat postmark, leaving most of the stamp design clear O Used, quality unspecified
F Neat postmark, across at least half of the stamp design G Untidy or indistinct postmark
H Heavy or poorly struck postmark
3. The third column gives an overall quality assessment for the lot, from ‘A’ to ‘D’. The same standard applies to mint and used stamps, to covers,
postal stationery, literature etc. An item graded ‘A’ is very fine; it has no faults. ‘B’ items are fine and may have minor imperfections. A ‘C’ item will exhibit
obvious faults. Items in poor condition are rated ‘D’.
Occasionally, an item in truly superb condition will be rated ‘A+’. This grading is used sparingly and is not applied to modern material, which one would
normally expect to be in very fine to superb condition.
An otherwise very fine item which has a subsidiary problem may be allocated an ‘A-’. This may be a stamp with writing or a hinge remainder on the reverse. A
cover may have a receiver’s endorsement on the face. The halves of a letter card may be stuck together. A book may have a previous owner’s notations.
Whether this factor makes the item an ‘A-’ or ‘B’ is a matter of degree. NB: An expertiser’s signature or handstamp on a cover or the reverse of a stamp will not
normally be cause for downgrading the quality of an item: such marks will be mentioned and you should make your decision as to whether or not such an item
is of the standard that you personally require.
Occasionally, the symbol ‘A’ to ‘C’ will appear in brackets: eg (B). This signifies that the item has been renovated or repaired and improved to the grade
indicated by the letter. The brackets indicate a qualified grading, the cause for which will be mentioned in the description of the lot.
4. The fourth column is relevant to perforated stamps, and also to lots listed under the sub-heading ‘Postmarks’.
For perforated stamps, this column gives a grading for both centring and perforations. The letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ relates to centring. ‘A’ stamps are very well centred;
‘B’ stamps are slightly off-centre; ‘C’ stamps are significantly off-centre, and may have the perforations slightly into the design; ‘D’ stamps are badly off-centre,
with the perforations well into the design.
[NB: These gradings are the same for all perforated issues, whether Australian Decimals, De La Rue Colonial keyplates or 19 th Century American issues.
However, it should be understood that for many issues poor centring is the norm. Thus ‘C’, and even ‘D’, gradings should be expected and accepted. For such
issues a ‘B’ stamp will be above-average and an ‘A’ stamp will be considered an exceptional copy.]
Following the letter ‘A’ to ‘D’ is a number ‘1’ to ‘4’. A stamp with all perforations intact is ‘1’. One or two short perfs, or normal rough perforations, will drop the
grading to ‘2’. More notable perforation problems such as the perfs down one side being trimmed will result in a ‘3’ grading. A stamp with major perforation
faults will be a ‘4’.
[NB: A stamp graded ‘A1’ is well-centred with all perforations intact. In many cases, particularly with modern issues, this is the norm. However, for many
issues, ‘B2’ or even ‘C3’ may be normal and quite acceptable.]
For lots listed under the sub-headings “Postmarks” and “Ship/Paquebot Markings”, or similar, this column gives a grading for quality of the strike of the
marking itself, and completeness. Quality is graded from ‘A’ (very fine) to ‘D’ (poor). Completeness is graded from ‘1’ (complete) to ‘5’ (identifiable only). ‘+’ is
used for superb strikes; ‘-’ is used for postmarks that are lightly struck, a little doubled, or otherwise a bit short of the mark.
5. The symbols in the second, third and fourth columns, and the illustrations of lots, form part of the lot description.
6. Figures in the right-hand column are our estimate of value. (If a lot attracts tax for Australian buyers, the estimate is in green, follwed by a small
"T".) You may bid at, above or below estimate. The reserve price for almost every lot is 75% of estimate (rounded to the nearest bidding step). Bids below this
level will not be considered.
7. We use the following standardised abbreviations:
Prestie Philately - Public Auction Terms of Sale
(amended as at 1 st July 2007: see in particular Paragraph 10 as to the unavailability of extensions to have perfins expertised)
1. AUCTIONEER: Prestige Philately (Prestie), a company incorporated in the State of Victoria, is the auctioneer, and adheres to the
standard terms of sale of the Australasian Philatelic Traders Association.
2. DESCRIPTIONS: We endeavour to describe lots fully and accurately. The description of a lot comprises 1) the codes to the left of the
description (for details of our symbols and grading codes, see the previous page of this catalogue); 2) the description; and 3) any
illustration of the lot or part of the lot. (The various codes and symbols are explained on the previous page.
3. ESTIMATES: The figure in the right-hand column following each lot description is the starting price of the lot in Australian dollars. A
bidder - may bid at, above or below the estimate. Bids below the reserve price (usually 75% of the estimate) will not be accepted. There is
no reserve on lots listed at $20 or less.
4. BIDDING: Bids may be made to Prestie by mail, by fax, by e-mail or by phone. Bids received by phone must be confirmed in writing.
At public auctions, bids may also be made in person, by phone (by prior arrangement) or through an agent attending an auction. An agent
must advise Prestie of the person(s) for whom bids are being submitted or else the agent will be personally liable for payment and
delivery of any lots purchased. Prestie reserves the right to refuse any bid, or to refuse bids from any person, for any reason.
In most cases, Prestie's bidding steps are as follows:
$150 - 300 $10 rises $3000 - 5000 $200 rises
$300 - 500 $20 rises $5000 - 10000 $250 rises
Under $30 $1 rises $500 - 750 $25 rises $10000 - 15000 $500 rises
$30 - 50 $2 rises $750 - 1500 $50 rises $15000 - 30000 $1000 rises
$50 - 150 $5 rises $1500 - 3000 $100 rises over $30000 average of 5% rises
Prestie reserves the right to raise or lower postal bids (depending on the bidder's apparent intention) to conform to these bidding steps.
5. TELEPHONE BIDDING: Bidding by telephone during the course of a public auction is permitted. However, clients wishing to use this
service must contact Prestie at least 24 hours before the auction regarding the special conditions that apply. [To see these special
conditions, go to www.prestigephilately.com from where the Telephone Bidding Terms can be read and downloaded.]
6. GOODS & SERVICES TAX (GST): Australian law requires that GST equal to 10% of the knock-down or sale price of a taxed lot shall be
payable by the buyer, unless the taxed lot is exported to another country. Taxed lots are indicated in the catalogue by the estimate figure:
being printed in bright green, followed by a small "T". GST equal to 10% of the amount of any fees or charges added by Prestie is
also payable by Australian buyers.
7. BUYER: The buyer of a lot shall be the person to whom the lot is sold ("knocked-down") by Prestie. In the event of equal bids being
received, the earliest such bid shall be successful. In the event of a dispute, Prestie shall have absolute discretion in the settling of the
dispute.
A lot is at the buyer's risk once it has been sold ("knocked-down") but ownership (legal title) will not pass to the buyer until Prestie has
received payment in full for the lot.
8. PAYMENT: Payment is due immediately a lot is sold, or immediately upon receipt of an invoice. For public auctions only, in addition to
the price for which a lot is sold, the buyer shall pay a premium of 15% of that price, plus any fees for postage packing and insurance or
credit card use that are charged by Prestige, plus GST as appropriate. No buyer's premium is charged or payable in respect of postal
auctions. (Payment should always be made in Australian dollars. If payment is made in another currency the buyer shall add the
equivalent of $A50 towards bank fees, any resulting credit being placed to the buyer's account.)
In the event that the buyer does not make payment in full for the lot(s) within 30 days from the date of the invoice, Prestie shall have
the right to exercise any one or more of the following rights and remedies:
1) To impose an accounting fee of $10 per month (or part thereof) plus compound interest at the rate of 2.5% per
month (or part thereof) of the total amount outstanding;
2) To terminate the contract with the buyer, in which case any monies received from the buyer shall be forfeited to
Prestie;
3) To terminate the contract and resell the lot(s) at any time, in which case any resulting shortfall, plus costs
including accounting fees, interest, insurance and resale expenses, shall be met by the original buyer;
4) To apply any monies due at any time from Prestie to the buyer in payment of the outstanding amount;
5) To take legal action against the buyer for damages for breach of contract.
9. RETURN OF LOTS: A lot may be returned, within a reasonable time, only because of an error in the description: see clause 2 for the
definition of "the description". A lot that has been inspected by the buyer or by the buyer's agent cannot be returned for any reason. A lot
that is illustrated in the catalogue or of which an illustration has been supplied to the buyer or to the buyer's agent cannot be returned for
any reason that is apparent from the illustration.
A lot expressed to be a "range", "group", "selection", "array", "collection"," accumulation" or similar, or any other lot containing more than
10 items - excepting sets of stamps - is always offered "as is" and cannot be returned for any reason. Similarly, other lots offered "as is"
cannot be returned.
10. "EXTENSIONS": A request for an extension to submit a lot to a recognised expert or expert committee for a Certificate of Authenticity
must be made in writing prior to or on the day of the auction. Prestie shall have an absolute discretion not to grant an extension. [In
particular, an extension will not normally be granted if the lot is offered with a recent Certificate of Authenticity or if the stamp(s) has/have
perforated initials (perfins).] If an extension is granted, the buyer must make payment in full for the lot including the buyer's premium, in
accordance with the terms of Paragraph 8. The amount paid including the buyer's premium will be refunded in full if the lot is returned with
an acceptable "bad" Certificate. All costs associated with obtaining a certificate shall be borne by the buyer, unless the lot is found to be
not as identified in the catalogue, in which case all costs associated with obtaining the Certificate shall be refunded to the buyer.
A lot described as being defective in any way may not be returned should the Certificate obtained mention any fault not noted in the lot
description. The buyer shall not be entitled to reject an item if the certificate includes any findingt that does not materially affect the
grading of the lot.
Unless otherwise agreed, nomination of the appropriate expert or expert committee shall be made by Prestie, and Prestie will be
responsible for submitting the lot to that expert or expert committee. Should Prestie agree to the buyer's nomination of an expert or
expert committee, the extension granted will be for a period of no more than 90 days from the date of the auction. If a Certificate
has not been obtained within 90 days from the date of the auction, the extension shall lapse and Prestie may thereafter refuse to
accept the return of the lot.
11. GOVERNING LAW: These Terms of Sale shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the State of Victoria.
12. Submitting a bid by any method constitutes acknowledgment and acceptance of these Terms of Sale.

PHILATELIC LITERATURE
1 L A
"The Royal Philatelic Collection" by Sir John Wilson (1952), being a complete catalogue
of the most important and valuable stamp collection ever formed, compiled by the Keeper of
the Royal Collection himself. Without doubt, this is the finest philatelic book of all time,
produced on the highest-quality paper, extensively illustrated with 64 black & white plates
and 12 exceptional colour plates. This is the deluxe edition bound in red Morocco leather
with the Royal coat-of-arms emblazoned in gold on the face. In excellent condition (but the
accompanying original slipcase is falling apart). Ex Tim Rybak.
Accompanied by "The Prospectus" of 16pp including a colour photo of the book and
sample pages. Also with an advertisement by the publishers that speaks of "12 magnificent
plates in most exact colour photo-lithography": they were so well printed that cutouts have
often been sold as original stamps!!
If this book had been published in any other field of endeavour it would be worth many
thousands of dollars. Because it's "only" philately, it has never achieved its potential and is a
gift at our estimate. Weighing 7 kilograms, this impressive volume should be the cornerstone
of every philatelic library worth the name.{Page 9.1}
THEMATICS & SUBJECTS
2 L B
Lot 2
SPACE EXPLORATION: 1964 Honolulu newspaper article "Astronaut Here/to Practice for/Gemini
Flight' with a photo of Neil Armstrong arriving in Hawaii, superscribed by him with a personal message
written in blue ballpoint ink "With the best wishes of/the Houston Armstrongs/to the Sydney
Armstrongs/ Neil", the paper a little yellowed still in fine condition, the message strong and completely
legible.
Neil Armstrong was a fighter pilot during the Korean War and later a NASA test pilot. Selected in
1962 as one of the second batch of American astronauts, he commanded Gemini 8 in 1966. Armstrong
achieved instant celebrity in 1969 as commander of Apollo 11, the first man to set foot upon the moon.
His famous words as he placed his boot on the lunar surface "One small step for man: one giant leap
for mankind" resonated with people around the globe.
The article begins: "Astronaut Neil A Armstrong arrived yesterday to practice his role in the critical job
of bringing the first two-man US spacecraft to a landing back on earth next year..." It speaks of the
Kokee Space Station on Kauai and more about Armstrong's anticipated role. While Armstrong's
autographs are readily available, items such as this, with a personal message, are rarely seen. Also,
material from before his space flights and consequent fame is very scarce.{Page 10.1}
COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Kangaroos - First Watermark
4 **/* A ½d green intersheet ("gutter") block of 24 (6x4) comprising the bottom two rows from the
left-hand pane of the upper sheet (Plate 1, with No Monogram strip BW #1zd) & the top two
rows from the left-hand pane of the lower sheet BW #1c, remarkably well centred for such a
large multiple, horizontal fold across the gutter, two units very lightly mounted otherwise
unmounted, grossly undercatalogued at $12,000 (for 6 inter-sheet pairs). A spectacular
exhibition piece.
Lot 4
The initial printings of only the ½d 1d 2d & 6d were issued in uncut double-sheets of 240.
This is one of the largest inter-sheet pieces remaining in private hands. The only surviving
complete sheets are in institutional collections. Arthur Gray had five small blocks of the ½d
that together amounted to a complete strip of 24 (2x12), but all of these were mounted and
most had faults. They sold - to at least 3 different buyers - for an aggregate of $US23,287 at
auction in February 2007.{Page 13.1}
$3000++ (2004). Pristine! Ex Arthur Gray.
The insatiable demand for unmounted single stamps has resulted in blocks such as this becoming
philatelic "endangered species". We believe that the market has consistently failed to recognise the
relative scarcity of blocks of the higher value Kangaroos. Showpiece blocks such as this item should
command large premiums.{Page 14.5}
cds of the same date, suggests that there was originally a block of 12. The doubling is quite irregular
across the block but is readily observed on all units, especially the vertical framelines and on the map
Lot 86
86 ** A+ B1 1956 Olympic Games 3½d carmine-lake inter-marginal block of 12 (3x4) comprising two
complete booklet panes with the complete Plate Number '2' in the margin at right BW
#332E(1)z, unmounted, under-catalogued at $60,000 (2006). The unissued value. A superb
and spectacular exhibit item. Ex Australia Post Philatelic Archival Sale by Tender Number
One (Lot 295) and Tim Rybak.
By any measure, this block must be considered to be the most important stamp item of
the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, perhaps for the entire British Commonwealth. It is
surely also one of the most important Olympics items from any country. Aside from the
Olympic Games, the thematic content is notable, municipal government and heraldry being
the most prominent subjects, but the design also contains elements relevant to the cattle
and wool industries, whaling, and shipping. Collectors of unissued stamps or booklets might
also be expected to have great interest in this dramatic block.
The ACSC states: "All preparatory work for the base-rate value of the Olympic Games
issue was done on the basis of a 3½d value. The increase of the basic letter rate to 4d on
1st October 1956 was done on short notice, and necessitated a change of value. By that
time, however, the 3½d die had been engraved, and steel master plates and electrotype
plates prepared, both for sheet stamps and a special plate for printing stamps for a proposed
3/6d booklet. No sheet stamps were printed, but a printing was made from the 432-on
booklet stamp plates comprising 27,000,000 stamps. Following the rates change the
proposal for the stamp booklet was scrapped. The Post Office retained some uncut sheets
of the 3½d booklet stamps [and destroyed the balance]...The Archival Sales of 1986-1987
[sic: the sales were in 1987 and 1988] are the sole source of the 3½d stamps. In total 40
stamps were sold, comprising four singles, four booklet panes of six, and a Plate Number 2
block of 12."
In the catalogue for the 1987 Archival Sale it was stated "No copies of this stamp exist
presently in the philatelic market. Only the equivalent of 16 panes of 6 (96 stamps) will be
released through these sales." However, Australia Post reneged on its undertakings to
conduct further sales beyond the second sale in 1988 and only the 40 examples detailed
above were released. In respect of this item, the catalogue continued "This is the only plate
number piece, and the only multiple larger than a pane of 6, which will be offered". That at
least was true.
Of the 40 examples released by Australia Post, no less than 36 were in blocks of 6 (4) or
this block of 12. If the blocks have remained intact, in effect that means only 9 separate
items could be available. There is no doubt that they have been "well held". In recent years,
very few single examples of this stamp, and no blocks, have been offered at auction. A
single stamp, catalogued at $5000, sold for $12,075 at our auction of 22/4/2006. At the time
of writing, a single stamp is being offered by another auction house with an estimate of
$12,500. All things considered, our estimate for what is by any measure one of the great
items of Australian philately should prove to be conservative.
Included in this lot is a pair of the commemorative booklet covers (Cat $2000 in 2003), a
1992 "Stamp Replica Card" with the 3½d in vermilion, and Tim Rybak's copy of the Archival
Sale catalogue.{Page 31.1}
1900 (Dec 18) envelope with a superb strike of the 'GOVERNOR-GENERAL/[arms]/FRANK STAMP/
AUSTRALIA' handstamp in blue uncancelled but with a Sydney duplex of DE18/00 alongside and
superb 'POSTAGE PAID SYDNEY' cds of the same date at lower-left, embossed 'Government House,
Sydney./[arms]' in red on the flap, Brisbane arrival b/s of DE20/00. A highly significant cover, in
excellent condition, and a marvellous first page for an Australian Postal History collection.
This usage pre-dates Federation (1st January 1901) by 13 days. Although the Earl of Hopetoun
arrived in Sydney from England in mid-December he was still merely the Governor-General -
Designate. The usage of the Governor-General Frank in this period was therefore unauthorised,
inappropriate and highly irregular. Only one earlier usage is recorded, from the day before, and it is
telling that in both cases the Frank is correctly uncancelled signifying that its validity was not accepted
by the post office. However, neither item was taxed, presumably as a courtesy to the illustrious sender.
red GPO registration label, curiously with no transit or arrival backstamps, suggesting it may have
been forwarded in a locked bag, a small repaired tear at the top. A terrific destination.
There were a number of circumstances in which mail was diverted from the usual channels and sent in
a locked bag. This often happened with mail between postal administrations, especially when money
orders were enclosed. There is no indication as to the contents of this cover. Our speculation is that it
contained postage stamps.{Page 52.2}
low catalogue quotes. Blocks and monograms of the higher values are all scarce to rare]
Between 6 and 12 different colours of each value were printed, from single blocks of 4 electrotypes.
There were 65 different proofs in all. Ron Butler's selection of 32 singles - mostly cut very close to the
In 1988 Rodney Perry offered by private treaty ("Price on Application") a largely complete
set of 57 of the 65 possible colours all in blocks of 4. Several of the blocks included here can
be traced to that offering and our vendor has confirmed that they are all from that source, as
are the blocks in the next lot. Richard Breckon, writing in "The Australian Philatelist" of June
1988, referred to the Perry blocks stating "at least one set exists in blocks of 4". We are not
aware of any others.{Page 61.2} (33 blocks)
238 C A-
Lot 238
1826 entire letter headed "Fort Dundas, Melville Island September 29th 1826" to the writer's mother in
England, rated "1/2" (or "1/9"?) and corrected to "1/6", fine strike of the boxed 'PORTSMOUTH/SHIP
LETTER' handstamp on the face and a London transit b/s of '22JU22/1827' in red on the flap. Ex
Daneswood. A great rarity.
This letter is of extraordinary historical and postal history importance. It is believed to be the
earliest letter from the Northern Territory in private hands. It is also believed to be the only
surviving letter from the first settlement - 1824-1829 - in the Territory. In addition, the content is a
marvellous commentary on the settlement, the soldiers and convicts resident there, the trying
conditions under which they eked out an existence, and the hostility of the Tiwi aborigines. It is
included here under New South Wales because at the time that was the only mainland colony.
The act of proclaiming a settlement in what later became the Northern Territory is of immense
historical and political significance: the western border of New South Wales was shifted from the 135th
to the 129th meridian of longitude. In one fell swoop, the area of New South Wales was doubled!
The letter was written by the newly arrived "surgeon", Dr John Gold. In three closely-written pages,
Gold provided a vivid account of his new circumstances. "...this is so unfrequented a part of the world
that it is a matter of difficult accomplishment to get away even if I should feel desirous to do so...the
climate is favourable to the production of disease...The hospital is a small but comfortable
building...and it is generally full. The men have lately suffered from scurvy malignant fever, and other
endemick [sic] diseases of a dangerous character. Besides these evils, we are subject to another
nearly as formidable. Scarcely a week elapses but our men are endangered by visits of the Aborigines
who are very wild and hostile in spite of all the kindness we can possibly show them..."
The letter is remarkable for many things. Doctor Gold not only speaks of the military establishment, he
names the officers and their regiments. He mentions five women (soldier's wives) in the camp and
"about one hundred convicts". He details the loss of the original vessel belonging to the settlement: en
route to Timor for supplies "...it fell into the hands of the Malays who murdered every one on board
except a boy who was redeemed by the Dutch for a musket and from whom we heard the tale..."
The conditions were ghastly, both food and medicine were in short supply, disease was rife. Finally
the commandant pleaded with London to be relieved and the garrison removed from "this vile island",
and in February 1829 Fort Dundas and Melville Island were abandoned. Sadly it was too late for John
Gold. In late-1827 he was murdered by the aborigines, the official report of his death detailing the
most horrific injuries including no less than 31 spear wounds. One spear had passed through his head
from ear to ear. Another was "deeply inserted in his right groin".
The Fort Dundas experiment is a little known but important and fascinating chapter in the
exploration and settlement of Australia's Far North. The letter is offered with a typed transcript, and
a file of background information obtained in conducting our researches. IMPORTANT NOTE: There is
no impediment to the export of the letter as an exemption to the Cultural Heritage Act has been
granted on the grounds that the item was imported for the purposes of being offered for sale.{Page
"The Australian Philatelist" of Spring 1989 has an article about this variety in which it is stated: "This
shows two distinct impressions, considerably displaced with regard to each other. The strong
impression is in a blue-green shade. The weaker impression, in pale yellow-green, was the first
printed."{Page 90.1}
particles. Under x-ray fluorescence, the so-called "bronze" ink is revealed as "gilding metal" or brass,
small piece by two neat strikes of the void-grid cancellation of Perth, a horizontal crease has caused
some surface damage especially to the left-hand unit though the appearance is still fine. A major rarity,
being the largest recorded multiple of this stamp. Ex Daneswood. RPSofV Certificate (2008).
Only two other multiples of the Hillman 6d are recorded, a pair in grey-black, and a pair in
golden-bronze (with the corners clipped) on a cover. It should be noted that this item is of an obviously
"bronzed" shade with significant metallic flecks in the ink. There was some discussion as to whether it
qualified as a "golden" bronze.{Page 100.4}
1842 entire duplicate letter to "JS Roe/Surveyor General/Western Australia" endorsed "pHooghly" with
postscript "Calcutta/24th Sepr 1842" and signed "Wallace Bickley", carried privately as noted on the
face "favd by/Mr Little", neatly endorsed on arrival by the postmaster at Bunbury "PO Bunbury Feby
23th [sic] 1843" & rated "d4" for internal postage, docketed "Recd at Swan R 14 April 1843", a few
minor blemishes don't detract from what is overall a very fine item. A remarkable item that took an
inordinate period of time to reach the addressee. [Bunbury PO opened in 1841 but PMI records postal
handstamps only from 1843]
The writer enquires about the proposed subdivision of land claimed by him on the Canning River.
John Septimus Roe was appointed Surveyor-General for the proposed Swan River Settlement. He
arrived there in June 1829 and held the position until his retirement in 1870. His coastal surveys and
30 inland excursions earned him fame and acknowledgement by some as "the father of Australian
explorers".{Page 102.1}
Lot 334
1871 (Sep) cover front to "CW Lomber/US Appraiser's Office/San Francisco" with
marvellous franking of Fiji Times Express 1/- SG 9 - characteristically cancelled with
manuscript "#" attributed to Levuka - in combination with United States 10c Jefferson Scott
#139 (straight-edge at right) which is tied by a segmented cork cancel, 'SAN
FRANCISCO/OCT 6/STEAMSHIP...' cds (a word excised from the base) at lower-left & 'SAN
FRANCISCO/OCT/6/CAL' cds at top, minor faults still one of the most attractive of the mere
handful of Fiji Times Express covers. Marvellous provenance: Ex Seybold (with his
handstamp on the reverse), Lagerloef, Purves, Robertson and Mayer. RPSofL Certificate
(1987, now lost) stated "genuine as far as one can say".
The Lomber correspondence was related to mining interests in Australasia. This is the
only recorded Fiji Times Express/United States combination franking, making this a
highly significant item for US specialists and particularly for collectors of the Banknote
Issues.
Offered with a copy of Geoff Kellow's article "The Postal Arrangements for the Fiji Times
Express" ("The Australian Philatelist" March 1988), in which he notes that the Fiji Times
Express stamps were the first issued in any of the British Pacific territories. He
concludes that the Express stamps paid postage only to the first overseas port of call and
were accompanied by cash to pay the ongoing postage. This item is Number 8 in Kellow's
census of a mere six covers, two fronts, and one large piece (the last lost in the bushfire that
destroyed John Gartner's collection). It must be noted that this is one of the best quality
items in the census. Most have significant faults and three of them - all illustrated by Kellow -
are of "spacefiller" standard only.
Kellow notes that the 1/- rate - common to his items #6 to 9 - is unrecorded but probably
represents an increase in the overseas rate from 9d early in 1871. He also notes that
subsequent to a Postal Act of December 1871, mail for overseas could be handled only by
the Government Post Office. The Fiji Times service was formally suppressed by a notice of
12/1/1872, only 14 months after it was instituted.
According to Colin Tabeart, this item was carried on the last voyage of the "Wonga Wonga"
which departed Sydney 1/9/1871; departed Fiji 11/9/1871; departed Honolulu 25/9/1871;
and arrived San Francisco 6/10/1871. The ship was chartered by Hall's Line. {Page 108.1}
1878 (May 3) usage of Indian ½a Envelope uprated with East India ½a 1a & 4a, to a British missionary
in Lebanon but written as "Lebauon" which was interpreted as "Labuan", an error that set in train an
epic journey, in the wrong direction! On the reverse, there are transits of 'OUTW/BOMBAY',
'GALLE/PAID' and 'SINGAPORE/PAID' (in red), an excellent strike of the rare second-type
'LABUAN/JU26/1878' and manuscript "Missent to/Labuan" all in red, the last in the same hand as
"Lebanon/Palestine" added to the address. Returned via Singapore (faint transit cds on the face) &
placed into the French mail system to 'PORT SAID/EGYPTE' where the manuscript "Pour Beyrouth"
was probably added. The absence of a Beirut datestamp at this point suggests the cover was passed
to a mission body that attempted without success to find Dr Carslaw & returned the envelope to Port
Said (a second b/s). Rather than return it to India, the cover was forwarded to 'JAFFA/SYRIE',
Jerusalem (large-part undated 'POST FRANCAISE/[Templar Cross]/JERUSALEM' in blue), and
finally 'BEYROUTH/SYRIE'.
That would appear to have been the end of the road. Perhaps the elusive Dr Carslaw was finally
located. One can imagine his bemusement on finding that his letter from India had taken 4½ months to
reach him! The item has been opened-out for display & the "hinge" reinforced with archival tape. Ex
Jeidel and Patrick Cassels. RPSofL Certificate (2004). With a typed commentary by Denis
Vandervelde.
One of the most extraordinary postal history items we have been privileged to offer. It would
be equally at home as a key item in a collection of Holy Land, Labuan, or of French Post Offices
Abroad, or Missent Mail. A sensational exhibition item of the highest order! {Page 112.1}
