Prestige Philately - Auction No 166 Page: 1
Lot Type Grading Description Est $AUD
The British Post Office in Siam
From 1858, the British operated a postal service out of their consulate in Bangkok. Strait Settlements stamps were used until 1882,
after which the same issues overprinted with a capital 'B' were made available. Most values are scarce to rare, and dangerous forgeries
exist. We gratefully acknowledge Michel Houde from Canada for his assistance in checking the material from high-resolution scans.
While it is often difficult to assess such material without physical inspection, Michel has applied his acknowledged expertise to making a
detailed study of the stamps. He has identified those he believes have forged overprints, those he considers genuine, and those that
are "suspect". That information is reflected in our descriptions.
STRAITS SETTLEMENTS STAMPS OVERPRINTED 'B': The 'B' remainders consisting of an array of
Overprint, 12c blue with Double Overprint, 'TWO CENTS' on 32c & an overprinted Straits Settlements
3c Postal Card that is considered to be bogus, and several stamps that may be genuine, variable
condition. Excellent reference material that demands close inspection. (49)
unpriced used by Gibbons (Cat £35,000 mint). A great rarity, if genuine. At the least, an attractive
spacefiller.
Lot 7
The chance of this stamp being genuine must be considered highly implausible However, the 'B'
appears to be genuine. Having said that, the Bangkok branch of the Hong Kong & Shangai Banking
During this period, and well into the 20th Century, Siam experienced recurring shortages of low denomination stamps, requiring
numerous revaluations of higfher values to meet immediate needs. Both handstamps and machine-overprints were employed. That
fact, along with the numerous sub-types and altered settings, make for a collecting challenge of complexity and variety. The most
extensive collection of the "atts" surcharges known to us was formed by the American Vincent Polizatto, and sold in Hong Kong in
2006. Numerous references are made to the catalogue for that sale. It is highly noteworthy that Len Colgan's collection includes a
This is one of the most contentious stamps in all of Thai philately. Although accorded full catalogue
status by Hobby International, the Frajola & Ostlie entry is in italics which means "believed to
be...issued without official sanction". However, Thai collectors clearly accept its validity, and it's
inclusion in Len Colgan's "Bangkok 1993" exhibit was not challenged. Vincent Polizatto considered the
issue to be genuine, stating that "the English numeral '1' is identical with other types and used copies
44 * A B1 1890 (Feb) Emergency Issue '2' on '1' on 3 atts F&O #29 (H #30) with the characteristic surface
abrasions at lower-left caused by a half-hearted official attempt to erase the Siamese '1', large-part
o.g., Cat 70,000 baht (= $A2333).
Due to an acute shortage of 2atts stamps, a small number of the '1' on 3atts surcharges were
additionally handstamped with a large '2'. [Few examples seem to have survived, suggesting that the
catalogue value is very conservative. The Feldman "Thailand" example - Lot 20111, described as "one
of the rarest unused stamps of Asia" - sold for €1135. Vincent Polizatto had no mint example: his used
example - Lot 830 - sold for $HK27,600]
This is another contentious stamp. Although accorded catalogue status by Hobby International, and
priced both mint & used, the Frajola & Ostlie listing is in italics, which means "believed to be...issued
without official sanction". However, Thai collectors clearly accept its validity, and it's inclusion in Len
Colgan's "Bangkok 1993" exhibit was not challenged. [Vincent Polizatto had no mint example: his
#35a) and another with the Characters at Right Largely Omitted H #35b (unlisted by F&O), Cat 15,400
baht (= $A513).
80,000 were prepared with a wooden handstamp & 120,000 with a metal handstamp but the numbers
issued were 8000 and 4000 respectively. Despite this disparity, both types have the same catalogue
value. The remaining stamps were issued with the addition of a '4 atts' overprint. (4)
1902 Battambang Provisionals
The so-called Battambang - or Battambong - Provisionals were produced with a Siamese-language typewriter by the local postmaster,
apparently with approval from the Treasury. However, when the postal authorities came to know of the existence of these stamps, the
issue was suppressed and all remaining stamps were withdrawn and destroyed. In 1907, Battambang was ceded to French Indo-China
and incorporated into the north-western province of Cambodia.
Len Colgan states that the Battambang postmaster started surchaging a part-sheet of the 12 atts
the stamps were released to the public, he returned to those inscribed 2 atts & re-typed 10 atts on
those few stamps. It is stated that only 12 of these dual surcharged stamps were produced and that
perhaps as few as 4 are known to have survived, making this arguably the rarest stamp of
In December 1907, during a critical shortage of 1 att stamps for the local letter rate, officials at only the
1925-35 King Prajadhipok (Rama VII)
King Prajadhipok was the youngest full-brother of King Vajiravudh. Fourth in line to the throne, and considered unlikely to become King,
he had planned a military career. During the Great Depression of the early 1930s, he introduced austerity measures that were very
unpopular with the military. In June 1932 a coup d'etat resulted in the abolition of the absolute monarchy. In 1935, while seeking
Australian Prisoners of War on the Burma-Siam Railway
Allied Prisoners of War (POWs) were transferred from Singapore to build the infamous Burma-Siam Railway. It is estimated that some
60,000 POWs and 180,000 Asian labourers were involved. Of these, about 16,000 POWs perished, along with half the Asian workforce
(so much for the Japanese propaganda slogan "Asia for the Asians"). Construction began in June 1942 & the task was completed in
October 1943. Subsequently, some POWs were transferred to Japan but the majority saw out the war in relocation camps or hospital
camps. Regardless of the destination in Australia, all the items in this section were passed by the censors in Melbourne. References
are to Vol III of David Tett's multi-volume work on POWs under the Japanese, available from Prestige Philately for $99 (GST inclusive).
Authorities...best wishes for a cheerful Christmas"! Tett pp55-58 - & oval "chop" of Matsuzaki in red, to
cards so inscribed were issued to POWs within Burma: see page 54]
