3.3 PELAGIC FISHES<br />

3.3.1 Community Summary Measures<br />

3.3.1.1 Abundance<br />

A total <strong>of</strong> 81,084 fish were collected by lampara sampling during day <strong>and</strong> night <strong>surveys</strong> at all 19<br />

stations combined (Table 3.3-1). Northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax) was the most abundant<br />

species collected <strong>and</strong> represented 87% <strong>of</strong> the total lampara catch. Other species with relatively<br />

high catch abundances included topsmelt<br />

(Atherinops affinis) with 7% <strong>of</strong> the total catch,<br />

California grunion (Leuresthes tenuis), <strong>and</strong><br />

Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax), each with<br />

nearly 2% <strong>of</strong> the total catch, <strong>and</strong> shiner surfperch<br />

(Cymatogaster aggregata) with almost 1% <strong>of</strong> the<br />

total catch (Table 3.3-1). No commercially<br />

important fish species were collected during<br />

lampara sampling.<br />
