The City of Los Angeles Harbor Department (Port of Los Angeles) invites your interest in the newlycreated
position of Assistant Port Police Chief. The Port of Los Angeles is the premier gateway for
international commerce in the United States and is the number one port by container volume and cargo
value in the country. The Port encompasses 7,500 acres of land and water along 43 miles of waterfront,
and features 25 passenger and cargo terminals, including automobile, breakbulk, container, dry and
liquid bulk, and warehouse facilities that handle billions of dollars� worth of cargo each year.
Reporting to the Port Police Chief, the Assistant Chief will assist the Chief in overseeing the day-to-day
operations of the Department. The Assistant Chief will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and
directing law enforcement, security functions and operations of the Los Angeles Port Police, and will
serve as the acting Port Police Chief in his absence. The Assistant Chief will manage the functions of the
Operations and Uniform Services Group consisting of the Waterborne and Field Services Division and the
Tactical Planning Division.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned, results-oriented leader with experience in a comparably sized agency
who possesses outstanding organizational, administrative and time management skills. Successful
candidates will be skilled in strategic and tactical planning with the proven ability to organize large,
multi-agency projects. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who can plan and execute police
activities by combining strong leadership abilities with a collaborative/inclusive approach. Candidates
who are detail-oriented and effective oral and written communicators will be favorably considered.
Strong candidates will possess significant budget management experience in an agency of comparable
size and scope.
Minimum requirements include at least two years of full-time experience at the level of Police Captain
or above, or at a level equivalent to police commanding officer. Experience providing law enforcement
in a maritime environment is highly desirable as is graduation from POST Command College and/or FBI
National Academy.
