CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT
Here we are again, with the winter season moving
really fast. By the time you get this newsletter,
the last XC race will have been run, that being the
Canterbury XC Champs.
We have had our Club XC Champs, which were
held at the Halswell Quarry, with a good turn-out
of members considering it was such a cold and
wet day. The course was very wet and muddy, but
was enjoyed by most of the runners. Thanks to
Olympic, who helped set up the course and
shared their champs with ours.
Kennett Cup Steeples, which were held at the
QE2 field, were well represented by the fluoro
uniform with masters and children well to the fore
in their various grades. It’s great to see that the
effort put into training is paying off.
Club runs have been going well, with a large
number turning up to our house. A good run was
had by all. Thanks to everyone who turned up – it
was a great afternoon.
It’s good to see Chris Arnold looking better after
his recent trip to hospital and scaring everyone to
bits. Don’t forget – gently does it!
Well, not much more to say at this point except
keep up the good training and you will get the
results.
The FOXDOWN RUN
Sunday 13 th June
We met at the Belfast tavern at 7.30 am. The
next stop was at the end of Foxdown Road,
Scargill. It was nice and fine. About 15 or so
of us (only 4 from Port Hills) ran or chugged
up the hill. It was really good – I was almost
tempted to take my jacket off – Oh yea! Up
near the top I reckon the breeze was coming
through the saddles at about 70 to 90 kph,
bringing much wind-chill and damp cloud
with it.
The next trick was to play “dodge the cow
pats” and the sharp-edged granite and Oh yes,
stay upright in the wind. Hughie next decided
to throw high-speed hail at us, then snow, so
we just trotted on and on in the lee of the
hills. The snow was just fluttering (quite
nice).
Then we got into the mud department – more
on and on, then Lo and Behold, a farm house
roof appeared, A beauty, bring it on! The cup
of tea and hot shortbread was very welcome
for sure.
Much thanks to Wendy and the support crew
(Kings and Fifes). At the Greta Valley
Tavern (suckling Veletto Rosso) and yes, the
log fire was sure a bit of all right as well!
Kennett Cup –
South Island Cross Country Champs
Saturday 3rd of July
For the first time in a long time, we had some
decent weather for the South Island champs
with the sun out in full force and a warm 13
degrees. I’ve been told that in years gone by
this is the coldest event on the calendar and
there’s even been snow for this weekend. It
almost felt a bit warm to be running, to be
honest, but I think I may have acclimatised to
the cold weather running, especially when 13
degrees seems too warm!! We had some
excellent results across all of the grades and
several medals for Port Hills runners so well
done to everyone. There was a lot of people
in the top 3 for their age groups and overall
team places saw some great results too with a
lot of results again in the top 3. All the good
efforts by everyone have put us in to 3rd
equal placing for the Canterbury Winter Club
of the Year award with 4 events left on the
calendar giving us a great shot at keeping that
place if not improving on it.
Oceania Masters Athletics Championships
4—11 July 2010, in Papeete, Tahiti
A smaller than usual contingent of Port Hills athletes
made the trip to Papeete for the 2010 Oceania Masters
Athletics Championships but still came back with a
successful haul of medals. The Pater Stadium was a
great venue with brand new track and good facilities.
Only the cross-country course was below par with no
real “country” territory available within reasonable
distance. In fact the event was well managed with only
some hitches with the transport to the stadium causing
patience to be tested. Fortunately friendly locals came
to the rescue a number of times with private rides to
the venue when competitors would otherwise have
missed out due to very late buses.
The most successful Club competitor was Glen Watts
with her unbelievable haul of 5 Golds, 3 Silvers and 2
Bronzes in the women’s 65-69 age group. Barbara
Bird 1 Gold and 2 Silvers in the W70-74, Bob Fyfe 1
Silver in M70-74, Pete Watts 1 Silver and 1 Bronze in
the M70-74 and John Waite 1 Silver in M65-69 were
other members to make it onto the podium. Pete even
made it onto the sports page of the local newspaper
with a photo in his first ever race walk! Overall the
conditions were rather hotter and more humid than
expected which made the longer distances in particular
tough going and resulting in times being regularly
slower than expected. There are full results at the end
of the newsletter.
A fantastic experience for all those who took part in a
very different environment to our usual athletics venues.
So get training for Tauranga – it is only two years
away.
CLUB Cross Country CHAMPS
26 June 2010
Despite the nasty winter conditions twenty- eight
hardy souls took part in the club cross country champs.
Held at the Halswell Quarry and shared with Olympic
Club, the course could only be called true cross country
– not the glorified “track courses” that we seem to
see nowadays. There was water, water everywhere, not
to mention MUD, I bet the wives – partners – mums
were looking forward to cleaning those shoes and
clothes afterwards. It was wonderful to see all the
youngies get “stuck in” and pleasing to see that nobody
drowned. Hardy Loris popped up and, with a
typical gutsy run, took out the women’s event from
Robyn and Pauline, who is back after her effort in the
SBS marathon. Also nice to see Margy (who doesn’t
like xc), and Annie, putting on their water wings. Gary
won the blokes race, with an impressive run from
Braeden to come home 2 nd , followed by a tactical race
from Charlie to sneak away from Tom on the last lap.
Mel, Paul and Michael S finished not too far off the
pace, but look at old Lord Module (Pete Daly) putting
his tuppence-worth in to be 1 st old fart (O’60) in.
Great effort by you all.
