Student Affairs Office
a. Mission
The Student Affairs Office’s (SAO) primary function is in line with the University’s
mission of enhancing students’ all-round development. Through the provision of
our comprehensive range of co-curricular programmes and activities, we strive
to contribute significantly to groom “preferred graduates”, particularly in the
areas of global outlook, critical and creative thinking, life-long learning, ethical
consideration, communication skills, EQ, workplace competencies, sportsmanship
and leadership.
SAO provides assistance to all students including non-local students in nonacademic
and developmental matters. For details of SAO’s services, please refer

b. Orientation Programme for Non-local Students
All new non-local students are expected to attend the Orientation Programme
organized by the Student Affairs Office starting on 23 August 2008. The detailed
schedule will be provided when you check in at the Student Halls of Residence on
22 August 2008.

Academic Matters
a. The Academic Secretariat
The Academic Secretariat co-ordinates all student matters concerning admissions,
registration, examinations and assessment, student records, appeals, award as well
as congregation.

d. Programme Registration
You are required to come to the University for programme registration on a scheduled
date. Please remember to bring along all necessary documents with you. For details
of the programme registration and documents required, please refer to the Notice of
Offer or Notice of Conditional Offer.

Accommodation
Non-local undergraduate students are eligible to apply
for accommodation at the University’s Student Halls
of Residence. Priority will be given to those new
students and senior students may be accommodated
nearby the Campus.
The Student Halls are adjacent to the university campus
with 10 minutes walk, and they are well equipped with
modern facilities.

The University campus and Student Halls are centrally
located in the Kowloon Peninsula, adjacent to the commercial
and shopping area of Hung Hom and Tsim Sha Tsui. The
University will not arrange any pick-up service at the airport,
as it is easy for you to get to the Student Halls by public
transport, details of which are as follows:-
Option 1: Take an Airport Bus (Route No. A21) from the Airport to the MTR Hung
Hom Station, or
Option 2: Take the Airport Express from the Airport to the Kowloon Station, then
change to an Airport Express Shuttle Bus (Route No. K1) to the MTR
Hung Hom Station.

If you come to Hong Kong by railway, you may get off at the MTR Hung Hom Station
of the East Rail Line.
After you arrive at the MTR Hung Hom station, you may walk along the pedestrian
footbridge and turn right at the outskirts of Royal Peninsula (walking distance is
within 15 minutes) or take a taxi to the Student Halls. Taxi will charge according to
the meter reading. Please refer to the map on page A5 for the transportation guide
to the Student Halls.
Student Halls Facilities
You will be arranged to reside at the Student Halls
in shared rooms. Shared rooms are equipped
with mini-fridge, air-conditioner, IP phone and
unlimited access to Internet. A toilet and shower
facility is shared between two adjoining rooms.
No bedding except mattresses will be provided
in rooms. You may bring your own from home
or purchase them upon arrival. Hall facilities
include function rooms, laundry rooms, dining
hall, swimming pool, computer room, fitness
room, etc.
Hall Management Office organizes various
events for students staying in Hall throughout
the whole academic year, e.g. the High Table
Dinner and International Cultural Night etc.
Students are required to wear formal dress at the
High Table Dinner, whilst students are welcome
to wear their own traditional costumes at the
International Cultural Night.

Finance
a. Fees and Other Costs
The tuition fee of HK$70,000 (~ US$9,000) for full-time Bachelor’s degree programmes
is payable by two equal instalments before the start of the first and second semesters
of academic year. Students receiving PolyU scholarships will receive refund of
registration fee after the commencement of the first semester.
If you are not a scholarship recipient, the registration fee paid will be converted to
form part of the tuition fee of the first semester. You are required to settle the balance
of the tuition fee for the first semester and other fees after arrival at Hong Kong. If
you fail to do so by the specified date, you will be considered as having given up your
place of study at the University. The registration fee paid is neither refundable nor
transferable after registration.
The following is an estimate of expenses required for studying at PolyU as a nonlocal
student.

b. Financial Assistance
Non-local students holding student visa are not eligible to apply for the Government’s
student financial assistance schemes. For details, you may visit the webpage of the
Government’s Student Financial Assistance Agency at http://www.sfaa.gov.hk/.
The University also does not provide grants and loans to non-local students.
Therefore, it is important for each student to make sure that he/she has the funds
required, apart from scholarship (if any), to cover the cost of studying at the PolyU
and living in Hong Kong.
c. Banking Services
You will find it convenient to open a savings account with a local bank in Hong Kong.
Most of the banks will ask you to produce the Hong Kong Identity Card or PolyU ID
card and passport / travel document(s), e.g. Chinese Travel Permit when opening an
account. A minimum deposit of HK$10 is required for opening a savings account.
24-hour Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are widely available especially at large
shopping centres. Visa and Master Card holders can have access to most ATMs.
American Express Cardholders can withdraw cash with Jetco ATMs.
There are two mini-banks, namely the Hang Seng Bank and the Bank of East Asia, on the
podium level of the Shaw Amenities Building on university campus. Opening hours are:

to have an ATM card to withdraw money at any
time.
d. Currency
The Hong Kong currency (HK$) is linked to the US$ at the rate of approximately
US$1=HK$7.78. Notes are denominated in $10, $20, $50, $100, $500 and $1,000.
Coins are in $1, $2, $5, $10 and 10, 20 and 50 cents. Traveller’s cheques can
be cashed and foreign currencies can be exchanged at banks, money changers
and major outlets. Credit cards are accepted at large restaurants and department
stores.

Health Care and Insurance
The University Health Services (UHS) of the University
provides on-campus primary health care to full-time
students, including clinical consultations, medication,
traditional Chinese medicine, first-aid, minor operative
treatment and immunisation services. (Basic charge
per consultation is $15.) Subsidised primary dental
care is also available.

Upon admission from the academic year 2008/09, all non-local students should
be asked to undertake a health assessment, including a chest X-ray at University
Health Service. Students should also be asked to complete a health questionnaire
during the health assessment.
In order to facilitate medical doctors in the health assessment, please bring along
relevant medical records or investigation results that you might have. (All the
information will be kept strictly confidential.)

The University has already prepared a basic insurance coverage for students joining
PolyU activities during their stay in Hong Kong. Students are encouraged to arrange
themselves for appropriate insurance scheme (e.g. insurance coverage against
illnesses, accidents and public liability) for better protection.
Immigration Policies and Regulations Related
to Non-local Students
a. Hong Kong Identity (ID) Card
According to the Registration of Persons Ordinance, non-local students permitted
to stay in Hong Kong for more than 180 days must apply for the Hong Kong Identity
Card (HKID card) at the Immigration Department within 30 days of arrival.
You are therefore required to apply for an HKID card in person at the Immigration
Department as soon as possible. Application should be made to the Hong Kong
Immigration Department at:

You may make an advanced booking via the Immigration Department’s 24-hour
Telephone Booking Service at 2598 0888 or at http://www.gov.hk/icbooking. In making
an appointment, you need to enter the number of your passport/travel documents as
the number of the identity document.
Please produce your passport/travel documents for the application. There is no
charge for HKID card issued to new arrivals. The processing normally takes about
15 working days.
Once you get the HKID card, you are entitled to use the government medical services
at local rates. You are required to carry your HKID card at all times. In case you have
lost it, you should report to the Police immediately and apply for a replacement at the
Immigration Department.

b. Visa Renewal
It is your responsibility to extend your student visa before it expires. Applications for
visa extension will normally be accepted 4 weeks before its expiry. Upon receipt of
all necessary documents, it normally takes at least 2 to 3 weeks for the Immigration
Department to process your application. You should follow the application procedures
stipulated by the Immigration Department and announced via the Academic
Secretariat near the end of Semester Two each year to submit the application for
visa extension. Please note that you must be physically in Hong Kong on the dates
of submission of application and collection of the visa label.

Pre-departure Checklist
Before departing for Hong Kong, make sure that:
• The information contained in the enclosed student visa label is correct.
• Your passport is valid throughout the period of your stay in Hong Kong.
• You have read this booklet thoroughly.
Remember to bring:
• All documents related to your study, and insurance if applicable. The documents
for your study include the original academic certificates and transcripts of studies
(Please refer to the Notice of Offer or Notice of Conditional Offer for details)and
the notice of offer issued to you by the University.
• Enough money for the tuition fee, Student Halls fee, other miscellaneous fees
listed in Fees and Other Costs on page 6 (if applicable), transportation and living
expenses.
• Any medicine you need to take regularly.
• A few recent passport-size photos.
Upon arrival at Hong Kong, you are expected to check-in at the PolyU Student
Halls of Residence during 9:00a.m. to 7:00p.m. on 22 August 2008 (though counter
opening from 7:00a.m. to 10:30p.m.), and then complete the programme registration
procedures and attend the Orientation Programme starting on 23 August 2008.

Typhoon & Rainstorm Warning
Tropical cyclones and heavy rainfall prevail in summer time. When there is typhoon
or heavy rainstorm, the Hong Kong Observatory will announce the updated situation.
You should note the following warning signals which will be broadcast on all media
and take proper actions.
• Typhoon
Typhoon Signal No. 1 & 3: A tropical cyclone is approaching Hong Kong, but
most activities remain unaffected.
Typhoon Signal No. 8 or above: A tropical cyclone is close to Hong Kong and may
attack the territory directly. All activities including
work, school and outdoor activities should be
ceased and you should return to your own premises
immediately.
• Heavy Rainstorm
Amber & Red Rainstorm Warnings: Heavy rain is expected and will affect some
special areas. However, most activities remain
unaffected.
Black Rainstorm Warning:
Intense and heavy rainfall is expected. Activities
should be ceased and you should stay indoor
when the warning is announced.

b. Electricity
The voltage here is 200/220 volts, 50 cycles. The electric plugs used in Hong Kong
have three rectangular prongs that form a triangle. The plug is three-wire grounded
and fused for all connections to the power mains. You are recommended to bring an
adapter for the electrical appliances which you bring to Hong Kong.
c. Telephone
Local calls can be made free of charge at the Student Halls. Pay phones can also be
found on the podium level of various buildings on campus. Local telephone calls can
be made with any pay phones at $1 each time. Internationals calls can be made with
most pay phones, but students are advised to do so with telephones which operate
with phone cards. Phone cards can be purchased at convenience stores round
the corner. The nearest one is the 7-eleven Convenience Store in Shaw Amenities
Building on campus.

e. Internet Access
Free internet access is available at the Student
Halls of Residence and computer centres on the
university campus.
f. Transportation
Hong Kong has a variety of public transport modes
including Mass Transit Railway (MTR), Light Rail
Transit (LRT), bus, tram, Peak Tram, ferry, taxi and
mini-bus services.
• Buses
Buses cover almost every part of the territory and run from 6:00a.m. till midnight.
Overnight buses are also available with a prefix “N” for some routes. You may check
out the major bus companies’ websites listed in “Useful Reference” for details on
routes, schedules and fares.
• Taxi
“Red” taxis run through Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, “green” taxis in the New
Territories and “blue” on the Lantau Island. The fares of hiring “red” taxis are:

• Ferry
Ferry services mainly run between Central and Tsimshatsui, Central and Hung
Hom and Wanchai and Tsimshatsui. There are also ferry services between Central
and several outlying islands, which generally run every hour or three to four times
per day, depending on the destinations. You may check out the ferry companies’
websites listed in “Useful Reference” for more details.

• Mass Transit Railway (MTR)
MTR runs 11 lines, covering almost every part of Hong Kong. MTR trains operate at
every 3-10mintues’ interval, depending on the time of day, from 5:30a.m. to around
midnight. Fares vary from HK$3.00 for an adjacent station to a maximum of HK$100
for the Airport Express.
The station nearest to PolyU is Hung Hom Station on the East Rail Line, which runs
from East Tsimshatsui to Lo Wu. For more details, please refer to the MTR website
listed in “Useful Reference”.
• Peak Tram
The Peak Tram takes just eight minutes to climb to the Peak. The service operates
from 7:00a.m. to midnight and the single trip fare is HK$22 (HK$33 round-trip).
• Tram
The tram system runs east to west along the north side of the Hong Kong Island. The
flat rate is HK$2.00 and the service operates between 6:00a.m. and midnight.
• Octopus Card
Octopus is the electronic ticketing system that can be used on multiple modes of
transport: MTR, buses, ferries, trams etc. The card can also be used on most public
payphones, supermarkets, some fast food restaurants, vending machines and phototaking
booths in transport premises. You can purchase Octopus Card at the Customer
Services Counters of all MTR stations. Besides, you can add value to the card at
these counters as well as any convenience stores like 7-eleven and Circle-K.

g. Food and Grocery
• On-campus
There are two student canteens,
a student restaurant, a Chinese
Restaurant, a coffee lounge and a
theatre lounge on campus. Please
refer to the Student Handbook for
location and opening hours of these
catering outlets.
The average estimated cost of meals per day at the student canteen is $65 which
covers breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Reading material, drinks and snacks are available at the 7-11 Convenience Store in
Shaw Amenities Building.
• Off-campus
There is a student canteen in the Student Halls.
Besides, many restaurants are located in Hung
Hom, Whampoa area and Tsim Sha Tsui East
which are all within walking distance of the
main campus and the Student Halls. There are
Chinese, Western, Japanese, Vietnamese style
restaurants offering a variety of food.
• Grocery Shopping
Park’N Shop and Wellcome are two major
supermarkets that you may find in Hong Kong.
There are Park’N Shop and Wellcome close to
the Student Halls of Residence. You will be able
to find groceries, fresh meat, fruit and vegetables
there.

h. Religion
Hong Kong is a multicultural city with a multiracial population living in harmony.
Tolerance for the customs and traditions of all religions and ethnic groups is part of
the city’s cosmopolitan philosophy. In Hong Kong, everyone is free to openly worship
according to their own beliefs. As most of the world’s religions have places of worship
here, any religious group with special dietary requirements is easily catered for in
Hong Kong.

i. Entry to China (for overseas students only)
A China visa is required for most overseas passport holders when travelling to the
Chinese Mainland. Macau have its own visa requirements though most travellers do
not need visa to visit there.
If there is a Chinse Embassy at your home town, you can apply for the China Visa
there. You must make sure that they will return the passport to you before your
departure for Hong Kong.
You can also apply for the China visa after your arrival in Hong Kong at the China
Travel Service (CTS) http://www.ctshk.com/english/useful/chinesevisa.htm. The
nearest branch is at MTR Hung Hom Station.

Chinese Mainland Students’ Association (CMSA)under The Hong Kong Polytechnic

校 园 內 有 两 个 学 生 食 堂 , 一 个 学 生 餐 廳 , 一 个
中 式 餐 廳 , 一 个 咖 啡 茶 座 和 一 个 劇 院 茶 座 , 位

学 生 取 得 香 港 身 份 證 后 可 以 香 港 居 民 收 費 享 用 政 府 医 療 服 务 。 学 生 必 須 随 身 携 帶 身
份 証 。 如 有 遺 失 , 学 生 必 須 马 上 到 警 察 局 報 案 并 且 到 入 境 事 务 处 辦 理 补 发 手 續 。
b. 簽 証 續 期
非 本 地 学 生 簽 証 到 期 前 , 学 生 有 責 任 向 入 境 事 务 处 申 請 延 期 。 入 境 处 一 般 在 簽 証 到
期 前 的 4 个 星 期 開 始 接 受 申 請 。 申 請 需 時 2 至 3 星 期 。 入 境 事 务 处 会 在 第 二 学 期 結 束
前 , 透 過 教 务 处 向 同 学 公 布 有 關 申 請 續 期 的 最 新 資 料 。 同 学 須 依 指 示 申 請 , 并 親 自
前 往 入 境 事 务 处 辦 理 簽 証 續 期 和 取 回 簽 証 。

大 学 不 為 非 本 地 学 生 提 供 助 学 金 和 貸 款 , 除 了 獎 学 金 之 外 , 学 生 須 自 籌 資 金 支 付 学
習 及 生 活 費 用 。
c. 银 行 服 务
在 本 港 银 行 辦 理 開 户 手 續 十 分 方 便 , 学 生 只 須 帶 齐 (i) 护 照 / 旅 行 証 件 , 例 如 通 行
証 ;(ii) 香 港 身 份 証 ;(iii) 理 大 学 生 証 及 (iv) 最 低 存 款 港 幣 十 元 , 就 可 開 立 学
生 儲 蓄 户 口 。

学 生 宿 舍 的 设 施
学 生 宿 舍 為 三 人 房 或 双 人 房 。 配 有 小 冰
箱 、 空 調 、 网 絡 电 話 和 互 联 网 设 施 。 两
个 相 邻 房 间 共 享 一 个 衛 生 间 和 帶 淋 浴 的
洗 浴 间 。 学 生 須 自 备 床 單 、 枕 套 等 寢 室
用 品 。 学 生 宿 舍 的 设 施 還 包 括 各 类 活 动
室 、 洗 衣 房 、 餐 廳 、 游 泳 池 、 電 腦 房 、
健 身 房 等 。
学 生 宿 舍 每 年 都 舉 辦 丰 富 多 彩 的 活 动 , 如
高 桌 晚 宴 、 文 化 之 夜 等 。 学 生 須 穿 礼 服
出 席 高 桌 晚 宴 。 為 了 突 顯 文 化 之 夜 的 特
色 , 我 們 鼓 勵 同 学 穿 民 族 服 飾 。

財 务
a. 学 費 和 其 它 費 用
全 日 制 本 科 学 生 的 学 費 是 每 年 70,000 元 港 幣 ( 約 9,000 元 美 金 )。 学 費 平 均 分 為 两
期 繳 付 , 分 別 為 第 一 、 第 二 学 期 開 学 時 。 獲 得 理 大 獎 学 金 的 同 学 在 第 一 学 期 開 学 后
取 回 預 付 的 留 位 費 。
如 果 你 不 是 獎 学 金 獲 得 者 , 預 付 的 留 位 費 將 轉 作 第 一 学 期 的 学 費 。 你 須 在 抵 达 香 港
后 繳 付 第 一 学 期 余 下 的 学 費 和 其 它 費 用 。 如 果 你 沒 有 在 指 定 日 期 之 前 繳 付 費 用 , 会
被 视 為 放 棄 学 額 。 已 付 的 注 冊 費 既 不 能 退 回 , 也 不 能 轉 作 其 它 用 途 。

住 宿
所 有 修 讀 本 科 課 程 的 非 本 地 学 生 都 有 資 格 申 請 入 住 学 生 宿 舍 。 新 生 会 獲 得 优 先 分 配
宿 位 , 高 年 班 的 非 本 地 同 学 則 可 能 獲 安 排 在 校 园 附 近 住 宿 。
学 生 宿 舍 在 大 学 校 园 附 近 , 步 行 十 分 钟 便 可 到 达 。 学 生 宿 舍 配 备 了 現 代 化 的 生 活 设

本 校 校 园 及 学 生 宿 舍 位 于 九 龙 半 島 , 邻 近 紅 磡 區 及 尖 沙 咀 區 的 商 业 及 購 物 中 心 。 学
校 不 安 排 到 机 場 接 车 的 服 务 。 同 学 可 以 自 行 搭 乘 以 下 公 共 交 通 工 具 前 往 学 生 宿 舍 。
1) 搭 乘 A21 路 机 場 巴 士 从 机 場 抵 达 港 铁 紅 磡 站 ; 或
2) 搭 乘 机 場 快 線 到 九 龙 站 , 再 轉 乘 K1 路 机 場 快 線 穿 梭 巴 士 , 抵 达 港 铁 紅 磡 站
