The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Political Science and International Relations at Boğaziçi University<br />

has adopted the following rules and regulations regarding academic honesty:<br />

1. Copying work from others or giving and receiving answers/information during exams<br />

either in written or oral form constitutes cheating.<br />

2. Submitting any work done by somebody else as your own, using phrases, sentences or<br />

sections from the work <strong>of</strong> an author without the proper citation, insufficient<br />

acknowledgement <strong>of</strong> consulted works, all constitute plagiarism.<br />

3. Plagiarism and cheating are serious <strong>of</strong>fenses, and will result in:<br />

a) an au<strong>to</strong>matic “F” for the assignment or the exam<br />

b) an oral explanation before the <strong>Department</strong>al Ethics Committee<br />

c) losing the opportunity <strong>to</strong> request and receive any references from the entire faculty<br />

d) losing the opportunity <strong>to</strong> apply in exchange programs<br />

e) losing the prospects <strong>of</strong> becoming a student assistant or a graduate assistant in the<br />

department<br />

The students may further be sent <strong>to</strong> the University Ethics committee or be subject <strong>to</strong><br />

disciplinary action.<br />

This course is designed as a seminar on current issues in Turkey’s foreign relations,<br />

focusing on foreign policy priorities <strong>of</strong> whichever government is currently in power.<br />

The seminar is primarily based on individual research by students organized in<br />

working groups, the results <strong>of</strong> which are going <strong>to</strong> be presented and discussed throughout the<br />

semester. Each group is going <strong>to</strong> be assigned a <strong>to</strong>pic from a list <strong>of</strong> priority areas in Turkish<br />

foreign policy as discussed and adopted by the class, <strong>to</strong> be presented according <strong>to</strong> the<br />

schedule below.<br />

Every other week, students will submit and distribute a one-page edi<strong>to</strong>rial in class, on<br />

a <strong>to</strong>pic related <strong>to</strong> either one <strong>of</strong> the issues <strong>to</strong>b be discussed in this period. A scholarly paper on<br />

the assigned <strong>to</strong>pic is expected from each student at the end <strong>of</strong> the semester. Grading will be<br />

based on the edi<strong>to</strong>rials (25%), presentation material (25%), and the final paper (50 %).<br />

Extensive reading is required for a succesful coursework. Naturally, following current<br />

issues will be based on moni<strong>to</strong>ring closely the media, the web sites <strong>of</strong> relevant foreign


ministries and other <strong>of</strong>ficial agencies, think tanks, and academic journals and other sources,<br />

which must be reflected in the bibliography <strong>of</strong> the final paper.<br />
