y to minimise risk
“The pilot for this course ran
in March, and it is anticipated
the first course will be run
early in the new financial
year,” Superintendent
Chelepy said.
“Participants in this course will
develop and run a counterterrorism
exercise in their
region in order to fulfil the
assessment requirements of
the course.”
In addition to training,
CTSPB also focuses on
engagement with owners
and operators of critical
infrastructure to ensure they
are prepared for incidents.
Critical infrastructure includes
essential services like power,
water, health services,
communications systems and
banking that would severely
impact our way of life if
disrupted.
Superintendent Chelepy
said Queensland’s Counter
Terrorism Strategy (2008-2010)
included an engagement
strategy to develop and
increase community, industry
and government awareness
of counter-terrorism
arrangements, roles and
relationships, and to engage
these groups in
strengthening
Queensland’s
response to
terrorism.
“We developed the role
of a Counter-Terrorism
Liaison Officer (CTLO) to
effectively communicate and
engage with the community
and stakeholders,”
Superintendent Chelepy said.
“Since 2008, we have trained
more than 143 police officers
and staff members in various
regions as CTLOs.
“During the course they
examine terrorism issues
that may affect critical
infrastructure, mass
gatherings and events, and
transport security. Participants
also receive guidance on
various issues such as risk
management and community
engagement.”
CTSPB provides security
advice to government,
business and industry
stakeholders. This advice
includes an analysis of police
intelligence to identify
security vulnerabilities that
could be exploited by criminal
or terrorist groups.
