FROM COMMissioneR ATKinson
An outstanding
contribution to policing
On March 5, Deputy
Commissioner Kathy Rynders
announced her retirement.
She will conclude her role at
Easter and commence preretirement
leave, bringing to a
close one of the finest careers
in the Queensland Police
Service.
Deputy Rynders has made
an outstanding contribution
to policing and has served
the people of Queensland
with absolute professionalism
and commitment for more
than 35 years. She has made
significant contributions to the
organisation’s post-Fitzgerald
reforms, regional operational
policing, senior executive
leadership and associated
strategic management of
the service, and provided
outstanding guidance,
leadership and support to the
role of women in the police
service.
Joining the then-Police
Force in 1975, Deputy
Commissioner Rynders spent
her early years as a general
duties officer, a traffic branch
officer, and later, a police
prosecutor. Her career then
took her to South Eastern
Region where she served
as Regional Duty Officer,
District Inspector and District
Officer before accepting
a promotion to Chief
Superintendent in charge of
Education and Training in
1999. Her first role as Assistant
Commissioner was with
the Crime and Misconduct
Commission, followed by
Metropolitan South Region.
In 2008 she became Deputy
Commissioner (Regional
Operations).
I have greatly valued her
contribution at the senior
executive level of the Service
and wish her well in her
retirement.
Floods and cyclones
At the same time, I would
like to acknowledge the
outstanding efforts of all staff
involved in responding to
recent floods in the south west
of Queensland and Cyclone
Ului in central Queensland.
Your professionalism and
dedication to duty maintain
the finest traditions of quality
policing.
Ipswich Station
opening and station
visits
On March 16, the Minister
and I officially opened Ipswich
Station. The station is well
designed to cater for the
staffing and policing needs of
Ipswich. I would like to thank
those members involved in
the design, construction,
opening ceremony planning
and ongoing operation of the
new station.
Recently I also visited the
Gold Coast, Fortitude Valley,
City Stations and Mt Isa, which
provided the opportunity to
discuss with members both
general issues and the specific
challenges to their areas.
Police induction
On March 19, the Minister
and I attended an induction
parade at the Oxley Police
Academy for 80 recruits and
eight police dogs—five drug
and three general purpose
dogs—in front of families,
friends and colleagues.
I wish our newest members
well as they commence their
duties at regions throughout
the state. I would also like to
thank those who organised
the induction ceremony.
