History<br />

• Founded in 1969<br />

• Pre-decessors were TOC-H football<br />

broadcasts and <strong>Plymouth</strong> Lions Club disc<br />

date (to Mount Gould <strong>Hospital</strong>)<br />

• Officially opened by Alderman George<br />

Creber on 2.10.1969

grounds of Derriford<br />

campus where there are radios able to tune<br />

in on 87.7fm<br />

• On the bedside equipment at the Royal Eye<br />

• 44 New Street, The Barbican (1969 – 74)<br />

• Lockyer Street <strong>Hospital</strong> (1974 – 1979)<br />

• Nelson Gardens (1979 – 1986)<br />

• Greenbank <strong>Hospital</strong> (1986 – 1993)<br />

• Freedom Fields <strong>Hospital</strong> (1993 – 1998)<br />

• …and now at Derriford (old animal house)


Why do we exist<br />

• “To relieve sickness, infirmity and old age<br />

among persons living in <strong>Plymouth</strong> and<br />

District, primarily (but not exclusively) by<br />

the provision of a local broadcasting service<br />

for hospitals and similar institutions.”


How do patients benefit<br />

• We provide added value to hospital life<br />

• Keep patients occupied during their stay<br />

• Free up nursing time to concentrate on<br />

clinical priorities<br />

• Can be a patient’s only visitor on any given<br />

day<br />

• Catalyst for family contact / thoughts of<br />

family (overcome geographic barriers)<br />

• Facilitates patient to patient interaction


Do people listen?<br />

• Previously difficult to measure<br />

• Since patientline we have some idea<br />

• Frequently now the 1 st or 2 nd most listened<br />

to radio station in Derriford <strong>Hospital</strong>.
