from office in 1786. 26 He and his wife were<br />

very much opposed to the negoti<strong>at</strong>ions with the<br />

Mennonite congreg<strong>at</strong>ion De Zon. These talks<br />

ended in the unific<strong>at</strong>ion of the Old-Flemish<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ion with De Zon in 1788. Van Dijk<br />

and his wife would r<strong>at</strong>her go to Giethoorn each<br />

year to celebr<strong>at</strong>e communion than be part of the<br />

unific<strong>at</strong>ion. His descendants gave the written<br />

sermons of Pieter Jans van Dijk to elder Bene<br />

Gerrits Mussche of Giethoorn.<br />

At Haarlem the Old-Flemish congreg<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of Lucas Philips had ceased to exist, so th<strong>at</strong> only<br />

the congreg<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> the Oude Gracht remained.<br />

In 1696 Gerrit Poulus Jonkheer was elected and<br />

ordained as elder. He served until his de<strong>at</strong>h on<br />

June 4th, 1749. His wife probably came from<br />

the province of Overijssel. Gerrit lived <strong>at</strong> Groot<br />

Heiligland, a street close to the meetinghouse of<br />

the Flemish congreg<strong>at</strong>ion. The Memoriaal tells<br />

the sad story of the suicide of his daughter. 27<br />

Simon Eduards Toens became preacher in<br />

1696 and was elected as elder of Haarlem in<br />

1713. He married three times: twice with women<br />

from the province of Overijssel and once with<br />

a woman from the Dutch isle of Ameland. By<br />

profession he was a textile worker. His sons<br />

Eduard and Pieter both became preachers of the<br />

Haarlem congreg<strong>at</strong>ions. Eduard Simons Toens<br />

was author of the Memoriaal. When the Old-<br />

Flemish congreg<strong>at</strong>ion split in 1758/59 he joined<br />

the Klein Heiligland congreg<strong>at</strong>ion. Out of deference<br />

to his st<strong>at</strong>us as elder, this congreg<strong>at</strong>ion gave<br />

him a se<strong>at</strong> in the bench of its preachers. 28<br />

Pieter Boudewijns became preacher of the<br />

Haarlem congreg<strong>at</strong>ion before 1737. He was<br />

elected as elder on June 16, 1743 and ordained<br />

on September 22, 1743. The ordin<strong>at</strong>ion was<br />

performed by Simon Eduards Toens and Bene<br />

Gerrits Mussche and Hendrik Simons, elders of<br />

Giethoorn. Boudewijns served the congreg<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

until his retirement in 1753. After a brief period<br />

he was asked to serve again as elder. From 1756<br />

until his de<strong>at</strong>h, Boudewijns served the remaining<br />

Old-Flemish <strong>at</strong> Haarlem and the Amsterdam<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ion. After this they were nicknamed<br />

“Pieter Boudewijnsvolk.” 29 Boudewijns was<br />

author of a c<strong>at</strong>echism, which was not only used<br />

by the Danzig Old-Flemish, but also by some<br />

Old-Frisian congreg<strong>at</strong>ions. The Old-Frisian<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ion of Balk reprinted the c<strong>at</strong>echism<br />

almost a century after its appearance. 30<br />

As we have seen, the Rotterdam congreg<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

had only preachers, but no elder. The congreg<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

of Amsterdam and Haarlem assisted it. The<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>at</strong> Brielle, Delfshaven and Oud-<br />

Beyerland also had no elders, though it is unclear<br />

who aided them with baptism and communion.<br />

The spread of pe<strong>at</strong> workers from the province<br />

of Overijssel to the province of Groningen,<br />

had resulted in the rise of a small Old-Flemish<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> Sappemeer. The Memoriaal<br />

informs us th<strong>at</strong> this congreg<strong>at</strong>ion was led by<br />

elder Harmen Jans de Lange. About this elder<br />

little is known, other than th<strong>at</strong> he died on June<br />

14th, 1739. 31 The Sappemeer congreg<strong>at</strong>ion was<br />

l<strong>at</strong>er served by preacher Jan Panneman.<br />

As we have seen, the province of Overijssel<br />

had four Old-Flemish congreg<strong>at</strong>ions: Blokzijl,<br />

Giethoorn, Oldemarkt and Zuidveen. We don’t<br />

know the names of the elder(s) of the Oldemarkt<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ion, but one of its preachers was Roelof<br />

Agge Joncker (preacher 1699-1712). He<br />

was the author of a c<strong>at</strong>echism and a songbook. 32<br />

Both his f<strong>at</strong>her and grandf<strong>at</strong>her had served the<br />

Oldemarkt congreg<strong>at</strong>ion as preachers. Joncker<br />

l<strong>at</strong>er served the congreg<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> Aardenburg,<br />

and was expelled because of his unchristian<br />

behaviour.<br />

Of Blokzijl several preachers are known, but<br />

no elders. Perhaps the congreg<strong>at</strong>ion was aided<br />

by the neighbouring Giethoorn and Zuidveen.<br />

The last preachers, before the congreg<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

united with the local Flemish congreg<strong>at</strong>ion, were<br />

Wieger Thomas Smit, who served until 1782,<br />

and Pieter Mol, who served from 1766-1782.<br />

The village of Giethoorn – called “small<br />

Venice” because of its abundant w<strong>at</strong>er supply<br />

– had two congreg<strong>at</strong>ions: a Flemish one on the<br />

south side and an Old-Flemish one on the north<br />

side. Bene Gerrits Mussche served as elder <strong>at</strong><br />

the north side congreg<strong>at</strong>ion from 1727-1783<br />

and Hendrik Simons from before 1739 until his<br />

de<strong>at</strong>h after 1743. L<strong>at</strong>er, its elders were Gerrit<br />

Jans Hooze (1796-1812), Gerrit Simons Bakker<br />

(1838-1875) and Hendrik Simons Bakker (1834-<br />

1852). The north side congreg<strong>at</strong>ion united with<br />

the south side in 1890. Of elder Bene Simons<br />

Mussche it is known th<strong>at</strong> he corresponded with<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ions in Danzig, Elbing and Petershagen.<br />

It seems th<strong>at</strong> in 1767 Mussche was willing<br />

to rebaptise a male person from Danzig, even<br />

though the elders and preachers in Prussia had<br />

doubts about the wisdom of this action. 33 The<br />

Giethoorn congreg<strong>at</strong>ion was the last remaining<br />

Old-Flemish congreg<strong>at</strong>ion in the Netherlands.<br />

Zuidveen lay close to the town of Steenwijk.<br />

The loc<strong>at</strong>ion offered Mennonites gre<strong>at</strong>er<br />

freedom than living in Steenwijk itself. Wh<strong>at</strong><br />

is said of Blokzijl is also true of Zuidveen.<br />

Almost no written accounts of the Old-Flemish<br />

congreg<strong>at</strong>ion have survived. Most church books<br />

and the meetinghouse were destroyed during a<br />

flood in 18<strong>25</strong>.<br />
