JOB TITLE: Animal Caretaker WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Nonexempt
REPORTS TO: Specialist-Curriculum / Teacher PAY GRADE: 720
DEPT./SCHOOL: Holifield Science Learning Center DATE REVISED: 6/10/13
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Assist resident Specialist-Curriculum / curator in care, feeding and maintenance of
the animal collection housed at the center.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Willingness to work with a variety of live animals - preparing meals, feeding,
cleaning animal habitats, setting up new habitats and general animal care
Effective communication skills with adults and children
Self-motivated and enthusiastic
Ability to work as a team member with colleagues
Experience:
Prior experience as veterinary assistant preferred but not required – other animal
experience will be considered
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
General Animal Care:
Cleaning: animal cages and food preparation area
Prepare meals for animals
Care and feeding of approximately 130-150 animals
Inventory of food supply (fresh & frozen)
Inventory of animal care supplies
Weekly shopping
Attend training sessions and staff meetings as require

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Mental Demands:
Reading; ability to communicate effectively (verbal); maintain emotional control under
stress.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Bending and light lifting. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

Any work related experience or additional education/training resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in
the above required knowledge, skills, and abilities is an acceptable substitute for the above specified
education and experience requirements.
