Jim Doyle came down from Belle Fourche on Saturday to celebrate an early Mother’s Day with Doyles. After lunch, they enjoyed some card games. Jon Strandell from the Minneapolis area, stopped to visit Roy and Dorothy Hamann on Friday. On Sunday, Mike Strandell and his wife (of the same area) visited Dorothy and Roy. Dorothy is his aunt but received a plant from him for Mother’s Day. Charles lives close to Miami, Fla. I saw in the Philip paper that Zona Hairgrove is now a resident of the Somerset Court, an assisted living facility in Rapid City. Zona’s late husband, Kenneth, was pastor of the Methodist Church, Wall, years ago. The Creighton Hall was filled with fun and laughter as family and friends helped Margaret Eisenbraun celebrate her 93rd birthday. Happy birthday, Margaret! Her children are Lorraine Fauske, Wall; Alice Richter and Alma Crosby, New Underwood; Anna Brown, Elko, Nev.; and Fred Eisenbraun, Creighton. Norman and Betty Klingbile had Mother’s Day early as granddaughter Malori Teigen and children came from Wright, Wyo., on Thursday, staying until Friday. Gail and Wanda Johnson of near Pierre (Cow Creek) came to Wall on Friday also. Senior Citizen’s potluck supper is this Thursday, May 16th. When the Senior Citizens met for their monthly meeting last week, it was decided not to have meetings for the summer months, reconvening in September. Marilyn Keyser is back home in Wasta. Her son Jay drove her in her motor home from Texas. He later took a flight back to his home. Welcome home, Marilyn! They had a nice dinner and went shopping for bedding plants. Doug Estes, on behalf of the 7th Cavalry Band, met with the American Legion of Wall regarding Memorial Day Services on May 27th. The band is scheduled to give their performance about 1:30. Doug is quoted as saying, “We will be playing; please come and hear us.” Talk about going straight from winter into summer — I think we have just done that! Trees aren’t fully leafed out but this heat should change that. We need rain! Terrible windy today, Tuesday. Ranchers are busy with brandings and moving cattle to different pastures. “Well done is better than well said.” ~Ben Franklin family members as well. We found friends and acquaintances in common also. Marilyn Keyser is back “home’ in Wasta for the summer. She has had a rough time with cancer, but is on the mend. Good to have you home again, Marilyn. Son, Jay, who lives in the Dallas area drove up with her and will fly back there. Thanks Jay and I’m looking forward to a good visit, Marilyn. Elm Springs News Our “porch” bats got an “E” ticket ride yesterday when I turned on the ceiling fan. Some brandings were taking place and lots of cow moving and of course still planting in hopes and prayers of the rains that are predicted later (not sure how much later but hopefully sooner rather than later!) Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the Elm Springs Hall is the Elm Springs School Eighth grade graduation and retirement party for Connie Mickelson. Eighth graders include: Carter Elshere, son of Ryan and Chrissy; Savanna Johnston, daughter of Sam and Cary; Kassandra Linn, daughter of Morris and Shirrise; Jacob Linn, son of Andy and Kellie Linn. Please come wish them all well on their new adventures! Laken Linn was a Tuesday visitors at the Gravatt's. Peggy went to Rapid on Wednesday to run errands and pick up branding supplies. Thursday, Peggy and Janet Wilson drove to Mitchell for the Lit Swap for the rest area that was held at the Corn Palace. They also got to tour the museum down there which was very interesting. After they were done with that they met Susie Cuppy for a milkshake before heading back home. Actually, they “antiqued” their way home. It was a long day, but lots of fun and found some neat things in the antique shops. The Gravatt's branded on Saturday and then went to Rapid City that night to watch granddaughter, Madison Fuegen's dance recital that was held at the Civic Center. For Mother's Day, Peggy and Larry went back to Rapid City to have brunch with Brad, Jes and the boys at their house along with Jes' mom, DeAnn Meyers. Sunday evening, Larry and Peggy were unwinding on the porch with a “beverage” when Mary Kay and Philip Wilson dropped by. The “beverage” drinking continued with a good visit. John, Jean, and Jim Linn attended the dance recital at the civic center for Laura and Katie Wilsey, Saturday night. Sunday evening at Tom and Shelia Trask’s were visitors to celebrate Tomilyn’s birthday on Monday: Pat, Julie, Joe, Nick, Gemma and Austin Trask, Dunbar Anders and Tomilyn’s family. Some of them went fishing to no avail earlier in the evening. They had enjoyed a day at home and went for a ride with the team of Percheron mares - Molly and Megan. College students in the area are home from their studies and ready to get to work for the summer. Gemma Trask is preparing to leave this week for a Right to Life walk across part of the US, Tomilyn Trask is home doing summer classes and working, Melanie Smith is working in Wall, Calder Johnston is home working, Dunbar Anders is home for a few days and then back to Alaska to work the fishing business, Stephanie Trask is in Vermillion working and preparing for her last year of law school. Religious Obituaries Delsie Doughty Wall_____________________________ Delsie Wall, 82, died at the Lutheran Collier Hospice Center in Wheatridge, Colo. She passed from this pet filled life via the rainbow bridge on April 24, 2013. Delsie was born in Greybull, Wyo., to Florence Herink Doughty and Charles Doughty, formerly of Wall, S.D. A railroad transfer of her father, Charles, took them to Greybull, Wyo, and then to Denver, Colo. Delsie lived most of her life in Arvada, Colo. She worked for Alright Parking and Ennis Inc. After her sister, Gladys, was deceased, Mary E. Jones, age 94, of Quinn, S.D., died Sunday morning May 5, 2013, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip. The world lost a treasure May 5th, 2013 when Mary Jones left us. Mary filled her 94 years with a zest for life few can match. As a young child, Mary’s natural love of life and those around her delighted her parents and two older siblings. Being a number of years younger than her brother and sister she was the apple of everybody’s Mary E. Jones_________________________________ eye. During her elementary and high school years Mary’s ability to develop and cement friendships budded and blossomed. Throughout her life, she seemed to be a friend magnet. One young man, Doug Jones, was lucky enough to attract her. They were married October 31, 1946 and Mary brought the same enthusiasm for life and love of people into her new home. An afternoon in her home, one meal at the Jones table, and you were forever one of the family. Life was never dull when Mary was around, affectionately referred to as a “Forever Party Girl.” Throughout it all, Mary was involved in her children’s classrooms and activities--Scouts and Jobs Daughters. Each child had an elaborate birthday party every year— even with two of them falling within a week of Christmas! Wife, mother, employee, and she still had time for bridge, majong, oil painting, crafts, and crocheting her famous dishcloths. Mary loved to travel. In her later years she was able to visit children and grandchildren in Colorado, Idaho, Texas, North and South Dakota. Delsie was an avid bowler and a member of Dumb Friends League and the Humane Society. Her home was always open to many dogs and cats. She was preceded in death by her parents of Wall, S.D.; and her sister and brother-in-law, Charles Smith and Gladys Doughty Smith of Greybull, Wyo. Delsie is survived by her husband, Ronald Wall; one son, Rodney Wall; three step-children, Lee Ann Mann, Jeff Wall and Scott Wall; seven step-grandchildren, all of Denver, Colo. Nieces, Carolyn Smith Wertman, Sheridan, Wyo, Merilyn Smith Fredricks, Boise, Idaho; and nephews, Edgar Smith and Morris Smith of Shell. Two of her many cousins are Lucille Doughty Huether and Phylis Doughty Reub of Rapid City, S.D. and numerous other relatives and friends. Interment will be in the Arvada, Colo., cemetery. days in Vegas!! Mary never stopped a minute and wore out both her daughters. Besides her family and friends, Mary had great love for her dogs--Shadow, Chevas, and Tena-- and football. She could out pick most of the experts on any given Sunday (to the great chagrin of her sons-in-law). Her greatest football love though was the Broncos. One of the highlights of her life was when she got to attend a Bronco’s game at Mile High Stadium. Another well-earned pet name, “Energizer Bunny,” demonstrated itself in both Mary’s personal and professional life. While raising four children, Mary worked in many different professions from telephone operator in Winner, hosting greeting card parties in her home, secretarial work, Avon District leadership positions, Motel owner in Custer and Wall, and finally as a hostess at the Cactus Café in Wall. Her fondest quote was, “I started getting old when I quit working.” (at the age of 85) At Mary’s request cremation has taken place. A celebration of life open house was held from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at the Quinn Community Center in Quinn, South Dakota. Arrangements are with the Rush Funeral Chapel of Wall. Norma Jean Slater was born February 2, 1928, in Correctionville, Iowa, the daughter of Marcus E. and Emma R. (Alger) Slater. As a child, she lived in Correctionville and Kingsley, Iowa, before moving to Kadoka in 1941. Norma was united in marriage to Richard G. “Bud” Olney on March 28, 1949. To this union were born 10 children. Norma was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, matriarch and aunt. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard G. “Bud” Olney, of Kadoka; nine children, Linda Jablinske of Lynnwood, Wash., Mike Olney of Kadoka, Darcy Gill (Keith) of Avon, Darla Schueth (Steve) of Boulder, Colo., Mitch Olney (Deb) of Kadoka, Matt Olney (Deb) of Mumford, Tenn., Lori Olney (Ann) of Sioux Falls, Colleen Hildebrand (Rich) of Kadoka, and Meade Olney (Lori) of Maple Grove, Minn.; 22 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; her sister, Sally Rubin (Roy) of Sultan, Wash.; two brothers-in-law, CD Uhlir of Kadoka and Russ Olney (Viola) of Kadoka; a sister-in-law, Diane Paulson (Gordon) of Rapid City; and a host of other relatives and friends. Norma was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ann Corrine; her parents; a sister, Carolyn Uhlir; and a son-in-law, Michael Planting Seeds I was very fortunate to have been raised on a farm where Mom and Dad taught us kids some awesome lifelong principles. Even though I did not realize at the time just how fortunate I was, now I am able to look back in appreciation of all that I learned growing up on the farmthings like Nothing in life is free or easy . . . Get up and out of bed early every morning . . . Work and work hard . . . To harvest a crop, you must first plant . . . Pick the weeds and pick the rocks . . . Keep the barn clean. The list could go on and on. In those days, I always had lots of chores to do on the farm, but planting seeds became my favorite thing to do. Planting seeds is still my favorite thing to do. Since I moved away from the farm many years ago, I have discovered another way to plant seeds. I still like to plant a bit of wheat and corn and vegetable seeds into the rich, fertile soil, but I also like to plant what I call "Positive Seeds" into the lives of others. I plant seeds of hope, seeds of love, seeds of encouragement, seeds of wisdom, seeds of ideas, and of course, seeds of success. Sometime, just like on the farm, the seeds have fallen on rocky ground, and the result is little or no harvest. But many, many times the seeds have fallen on the lives of people who were hungry for growth, for change, for a richer, fuller and happier life. In I Cor. 15:1 the Apostle Paul writes of “the gospel… wherein ye stand” and in Rom. 5:2 of “this grace wherein we stand,” while in Gal. 5:1 he bids us: “Stand fast… in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free.” Perhaps all this is well summed up in his appeal to his beloved Philippians: “Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown… stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved” (Phil. 4:1). But the Christian life is more than a stand — it is a walk (which in Scripture refers to conduct). Once, says Paul, we walked “in trespasses and sins” (Eph. 2:1,2) but having been saved by grace, through faith in Christ, we are now to “walk in newness of life” (Rom. 6:4). Thus the Apostle bids us to “walk worthy of the Lord” (Col. 1:10), to “walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil” (Eph. 5:15-16). But the Christian life is even more than a walk; it is a race. Sad to say, many Christians whose “walk” is consistent and commendable, have never come to look upon the Christian life as a race. These never put enough into it so that it might be said of them that they are running. Yet the same great Apostle wrote, by divine inspiration: “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us” (Heb. 12:1). The word “patience” in this passage points up the fact that the Christian life is not a short “hundredyard dash”; it requires much endurance. Thus we should put into it all that we have. “They which run in a race,” says the Apostle, “run all,” but they do not all receive the prize. Hence the admonition: “So run that ye may obtain” (I Cor. 9:24). Those who have not trusted Christ as Savior have not even begun to stand, or walk, much less to run a race for Him. These might as well forget rewards until they first accept “the gift of God… eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom. 6:23).
