the NIM server initiates an operation on the next machine in the group until all<br />

group members have been processed, or the time limit has been exceeded. The<br />

options are in place for the duration of the NIM operation. Subsequent NIM<br />

operations on the group can use different values if desired.<br />

The options are valid only for certain operations when a NIM group is used as the<br />

target. The NIM operation will fail with an error message if the options are used<br />

for individual machine, LPP, or SPOT targets. The options appear near the end of<br />

the following NIM SMIT panels that initiate operations likely to generate large<br />

amounts of network traffic:<br />

• Install the Base Operating System on Stand-alone Clients<br />

• Install and Update from LATEST Available Software<br />

• Update Installed Software to Latest Level (Update All)<br />

• Install and Update Software by Package Name (includes devices and printers)<br />

• Install Software Bundle (Easy Install)<br />

• Update Software by Fix (APAR)<br />

• Install and Update from ALL Available Software<br />

• Install mksysb on an Alternate Disk<br />

• Clone the rootvg to an Alternate Disk<br />

Figure 29 shows an example of the new NIM settings within SMIT.<br />

6.12.2 Resource Lock Contention<br />

The lock granularity of the NIM subsystem has been improved to allow more<br />

operations in parallel. Previous versions of NIM would lock an object for the<br />

duration of some operations, thus preventing any other operation on the same<br />

object.<br />
