5.5 Physical Partition Support (<strong>4.3</strong>.1)<br />

The support for physical partition sizes of 512 MB and 1024 MB have been added<br />

to <strong>AIX</strong> <strong>4.3</strong>.1. Volume groups created with this new size cannot be imported into<br />

previous versions of <strong>AIX</strong>.<br />

In pre-<strong>AIX</strong> <strong>4.3</strong>.1 versions, if you add a new volume group, the physical partition<br />

sizes in megabytes you are allowed to chose are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, and<br />

256.<br />

For <strong>AIX</strong> <strong>4.3</strong>.1, and later releases, if you add a new volume group, the physical<br />

partition sizes in megabytes you are allowed to chose are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64,<br />

128, 256, 512, and 1024 MBs.<br />

If you select a physical partition size of 512 or 1024 MBs on a <strong>AIX</strong> <strong>4.3</strong>.1 or later<br />

system, the volume group created cannot be imported on older versions of <strong>AIX</strong>.<br />

5.6 Big Volume Groups (<strong>4.3</strong>.2)<br />

A new volume group (VG) format is added in <strong>AIX</strong> <strong>4.3</strong>.2, which increases the<br />

maximum number of disks that can be included in a volume group from 32 to 128.<br />

The maximum number of logical volumes in this new volume group format is<br />

increased from 256 to 512. This means:<br />

• The maximum physical volume (PV) number in one volume group is increased<br />

from 32 to 128 (1024 in the future)<br />

• The maximum logical volume (LV) number in one volume group is increased<br />

from 256 to 512 (1024 in the future)<br />

Table 20 provides information about LVM restrictions in several <strong>AIX</strong> versions.<br />
