About the Cap & Gown
At the University of Florida, the lining of the master’s and Ph.D. hood
has a blue chevron on an orange background to represent the university
colors. University faculty members who hold degrees from another college
or university wear the colors of their alma mater.
The velvet edging on the master’s hood represents the particular
degree held by the wearer. Liberal Arts is white and Liberal Sciences is
gold-yellow. The velvet edging on the Ph.D. hood is blue.
Each degree level equates to differences in the gown. Bachelor gowns
have standard sleeves. Master gowns have oblong-shaped sleeves with
wrist openings. Ph.D. gowns have bell sleeves with velvet chevrons on
the sleeves.
Master’s and Ph.D. tassels are black. Undergraduate tassels are white
for bachelor of arts and gold-yellow for bachelor of science.
The undergraduate costume also may include honors cords. Each
orange and blue pair of cords corresponds to a level of honors: three
pairs represent summa cum laude (highest honors); two pairs represent
magna cum laude (high honors); and one pair represents cum laude (honors).
Diplomas
Diplomas will be mailed to the graduate’s permanent home address in
approximately eight weeks.
UF Distinguished Alumnus Byong Man Ahn
Distinguished Alumnus Byong Man Ahn is
recognized as a national leader in South
Korea and throughout the world for his
innovative approach to language instruction
and research in area studies. The 1974 political
science Ph.D. graduate’s distinguished
40-year career is marked by his in-depth
studies of government, economics and culture,
as well as his monumental contributions
to education and university leadership.
Dr. Ahn was born in Seoul, Korea and
earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in
law from Seoul National University in 1964
and 1967, respectively. After teaching in the
Department of Public Administration at
Myong-Ji University in Seoul from
1967–1970, he was a Fulbright Scholar in
1970 in Korea. The Fulbright program recommended
UF’s Ph.D. program in political
science, and Dr. Ahn made the decision to
come to Gainesville.
He finished his doctoral degree in three
years and maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point
average. After returning to Korea in 1975, he
joined the faculty of Hankuk University of Foreign
Studies in Seoul, one of the premier institutions
of higher education in Korea. He has
served the university in numerous roles,
including professor in the Department of Public
Administration, dean of Student Affairs
(1978–1980), dean of the Office and Planning
and Coordination (1988–1992), vice president
and dean of the Graduate School (1992–1994)
and president (1994–1998 and 2002–present).
He is the first president elected to serve a second
four-year term, and during his tenure he
has developed top-notch programs, including
the Department of Information and Communication,
the Graduate School of Global Business
and the Campus Faculty Research Center.
Dr. Ahn was a Fulbright Scholar in
political science at the University of Delaware
from 1981–1982 and a visiting professor at
Harvard University from 1981–1993. He has
distinguished himself for his studies of the
political attitudes and policies of his native
South Korea and its relationships to the
United States. He has published numerous
articles and books in Korean and English,
including Elections in Korea (1987), which
received the Korean Political Science Association’s
Book of the Year Award. He also
received an honorary doctorate of humane
letters from the University of Delaware in
2004.
He has served as president of the Korean
University Presidents Association, the Association
for Public Administration, the Korean
Fulbright Alumni Association and the Korean
Gator Club.
In 2004, Dr. Ahn returned to UF to sign a cooperative
agreement between the university and Hankuk University,
providing for the exchange of faculty and students. He says his
most memorable professor and course at UF was Political Science
Professor Alfred Clubok and his Scope and Methodology
of Political Science class. “Dr. Clubok taught me how to look
at reality and how to raise questions to all issues,” says Dr.
Ahn. “He emphasized that the way to seek answers is through
scientific inquiry.”
CLAS Distinguished Scholar John Thompson
Among the many academic scholars in the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Graduate
Research Professor of Mathematics
John G. Thompson is one of the most distinguished,
earning the Fields Medal in 1970,
the highest prize in mathematics, equivalent
in prestige to the Nobel Prize. In honor of
his many achievements throughout his 46-
year career, the college has selected him as
the first recipient of the CLAS Distinguished
Scholar Award. The award was created this
year by CLAS Dean Neil S. Sullivan to honor
the lifetime achievements of outstanding faculty
members.
Thompson’s career began at Yale University,
where he entered as a theology major
and intended to become a Presbyterian minister.
He credits a college roommate for
helping spark his interest in math. “One of
my undergraduate roommates was a pre-med
student and was reading Gamow’s book, One,
Two, Three…Infinity, and I started reading it.
Math started to really interest me.”
After receiving his Ph.D. in 1959 from
the University of Chicago, Thompson worked
as an assistant professor at Harvard University
and then as a professor at the University of
Chicago. He was appointed Rouse Ball Professor
at the University of Cambridge in England
in 1970, where he spent the next 23
years before coming to UF in 1993.
Thompson’s research focuses on group
theory, a branch of mathematics that studies
symmetries, such as those that arise in geometry
and in the solutions to algebraic equations.
He is noted in the field for collaborating
with fellow mathematician Walter Feit to
solve one of its most difficult problems. The
two worked on the “odd order” problem and
wrote a 253-page proof that comprised an
entire issue of the Pacific Journal of Mathematics.
This achievement won Thompson the Fields
Medal.
In 2001, Thompson received the
National Medal of Science from former U.S.
President Bill Clinton in a special ceremony
at the White House. According to the
National Science Foundation, which administers
the awards, Thompson is “considered a
world leader in algebra and a foremost group
theorist.”
Krishnaswami Alladi, UF math department
chair, refers to Thompson as the
“crown jewel of our department.” He also
John Thompson (left) received the National Medal of Science from Neil
Lane, scientific advisor to President Clinton, in December 2000.
Following today’s commencement, many graduates and their
families will no doubt flock to Amelia’s Italian restaurant in
downtown Gainesville to celebrate. But this year, 70-year-old
waiter Donald Rosenberg will not be there to serve them.
Instead, he will be celebrating his own success after receiving
a Ph.D. in Romance languages and literatures. After 52 years
in the restaurant business, he’s starting a new life.
Born and raised in Boston, Rosenberg dropped out of
high school on his 16th birthday. He immediately left home
and began supporting himself as a busboy and, after two
years, was promoted to waiter and has not changed careers
since. It was not until age 46 that he decided to earn his
GED. A few years later, he began taking courses at Palm
Beach Community College in West Palm Beach, enrolling in
classes that interested him, such as French literature and
classical music.
“I love to read and research and study, but only on my
own terms at my own pace,” Rosenberg says. After two
years, he had accumulated so many credits that an associate’s
degree was easily within grasp. He earned an AA in
1987, and then moved on to Florida Atlantic University, where
he received a BA in languages and linguistics in 1989 and a
master’s in the same discipline in 1991. “Then I thought, I’m
not going to stop now,” he says. “I’m going to go for everything!”
He was accepted into UF’s Ph.D. program in Romance
languages and literatures in 1992 and decided to concentrate
on Spanish literature.
Rosenberg’s dissertation is on the use of paradox in the
writings of Miguel De Unamuno, a writer and philosopher
from the Basque Region of Spain who lived from 1864 to
1936, and who served as president of the University of Salamanca.
Rosenberg worked under the guidance of dissertation
chair Montserrat Alás-Brun, an associate professor of Spanish.
For more than eight of the 13 years Rosenberg has lived in
Gainesville, he has supported himself working as a part-time
waiter at Amelia’s. Following graduation, however, he plans to
begin his job search and start a new life for himself.
“I have been trying to change the attitude that a person’s
ability is commensurate to a number on a calendar,” he
says. “The majority of people as they reach their last years
internalize these societal attitudes, so they tell themselves
that they cannot do this or that because they are of a certain
age. I think this is very tragic because a lifetime of experience
is something that should not go to waste.”
University of Florida College of Liberal Arts & Sciences Commencement 2005
15
Alma Mater
by Milton Yeats
Florida, Our Alma Mater,
Thy glorious name we praise.
All thy loyal sons and daughters
A joyous song shall raise.
Where palm and pine are blowing,
Where southern seas are flowing,
Shine forth thy noble Gothic walls,
Thy lovely vine clad halls.
‘Neath the orange and blue victorious,
Our love shall never fail.
There’s no other name so glorious,
All hail, Florida, hail!
About UF
The University of Florida traces its origins to
1853 when the state-funded East Florida Seminary
acquired the private Kingsbury Academy in Ocala,
Florida. After the Civil War, the seminary was
moved to Gainesville. It was consolidated with the
state’s land-grant Florida Agricultural College, then
in Lake City, to become the University of Florida in
1906. Until 1947, UF was designated for men and
was only one of three state universities. Today,
with more than 48,000 students, UF is among the
five largest universities in the nation.
It is the largest of the 11 state universities,
and is governed by the State Board of Education,
the Florida Board of Governors and the UF Board
of Trustees.
UF joined the ranks of North America’s best
graduate research institutions with its admission in
1985 to the Association of American Universities,
the most prestigious organization in higher education.
The university also has been recognized by
the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education as
one of the nation’s leading research universities.
The university includes 16 colleges, five
schools and more than 100 interdisciplinary
research and education centers, bureaus and institutes.
Students can choose majors from 100 undergraduate
degree programs and around 200 graduate
programs.
UF employs more than 4,000 faculty members
and 7,500 administrative professional and support
staff. With operations in more than 900 buildings
on 2,000 acres, the university has research centers,
extension offices, clinics and other facilities in every
county in Florida.
