Preventive Maintenance<br />

FRAME AND FIFTH WHEEL<br />

Engine Painting<br />

Do not electrostatically paint electronically controlled engines<br />

or vehicles with these engines.<br />

Frame Rails<br />

WARNING! Do not cut, splice or weld on frame<br />

rails or drill through the top or bottom flanges.<br />

These operations could affect frame rail<br />

strength leading to a failure resulting in an accident<br />

causing death or injury. Always leave frame<br />

repairs to your <strong>Peterbilt</strong> Dealer.<br />

Fifth Wheel Maintenance<br />

Proper preventive maintenance is essential to trouble-free<br />

service and safe operation of the fifth wheel.<br />

Every 2 Months or 25,000 Miles:<br />

• Refer to specific manufacturer's literature for any special<br />

instructions.<br />

Frame and Fifth Wheel<br />

• Steam clean the fifth wheel.<br />

• Check lock guard operation using a commercial lock<br />

tester.<br />

• Clean and oil all moving parts.<br />

• Lubricate the following parts with a lithium-base grease.<br />

• Lock mechanism<br />

• All grease fittings (especially those which grease the<br />

top surface of the fifth wheel).<br />

• Check for missing or loose nuts and bolts in the fifth<br />

wheel and mounting brackets. Retighten loose bolts to<br />

correct torque. Replace missing or damaged bolts.<br />

Every 6 Months or 50,000 Miles:<br />

• Refer to specific manufacturer's literature for any special<br />

instructions.<br />

• Remove fifth wheel from vehicle. Refer to the <strong>Medium</strong><br />

<strong>Duty</strong> Maintenance <strong>Manual</strong>, “Fifth Wheel Removal.”<br />

• Steam clean the fifth wheel and mounting brackets.<br />

• Check all moving parts for excessive wear or damage.<br />

Replace all worn or broken parts.<br />

• Complete two-month service procedure.<br />

• Install fifth wheel. Refer to the <strong>Medium</strong> <strong>Duty</strong> Maintenance<br />

<strong>Manual</strong>, “Fifth Wheel Installation.”<br />
