PART 7: STARTING & OPERATING THE VEHICLE
Since each vehicle is custom-equipped, all engine operation
instructions in this manual are general. You will want
to consult the manual for your engine to find out details
about your specific engine’s needs. You may need to use
a slightly different procedure from the one outlined here.
Also check the ATA Truck Driver’s Handbook provided with
your vehicle. It will give you tips on starting, shifting, and
driving a truck.
Below are instructions for both normal-temperature starting
and cold-weather starting.
Normal Temperature Starting Procedure
When the outside temperature is above 50° F (10° C), you
can use the following procedure.
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Put your main transmission in Neutral.
3. Disengage (depress) the clutch (with manual transmission).
4. Turn the key switch to ON. The vehicle’s system will
conduct a test of all gauges and warning lights.
NOTE: If the instrument panel displays other
messages or if other alarms activate after the
key is turned ON, see the Instruments and Controls
section to understand what you should do.
CAUTION: Never operate the starter motor
while the engine is running. The starter and
flywheel gears could clash or jam, severely
damaging them.
NOTE: Some starters are equipped with overcrank
protection. Check the “Engine Operation
and Maintenance Manual” for details.
5. Turn the ignition key to the START position. If the
engine does not start within 30 seconds, release the
starter button. To avoid overtaxing the starter motor
or the batteries, don’t use the starter for more than 30
seconds. Let the starter motor cool and the batteries
recover for two minutes before trying again.
