PART 6: DRIVER’S CHECKLIST
Safe Vehicle Operation
To keep your vehicle in top shape, and to maintain its high
level of safety for you, your passengers, and your load,
make a thorough inspection every day before you drive.
You’ll save maintenance time later -- and the safety checks
could help prevent a serious accident. Please remember,
too, that Federal law requires a pre-trip inspection and so
do commercial trucking companies.
For more information, you can refer to Federal Motor Carrier
Safety Regulation 392.7 which tells you that interstate
commercial motor vehicles are not to be driven unless the
driver is sure that certain parts and accessories are in working
order.
You aren’t expected to become a professional mechanic.
The purpose of your inspections is to find anything that
might interfere with the safe and efficient transportation of
yourself and your load. If you do find something wrong and
can’t fix it yourself, please have a qualified mechanic fix it
right away.
For your safety, as well as those around you, be a responsible
driver:
• If you drink, do not drive.
• Do not drive if you are tired, ill, or under emotional
stress.
Much has gone into the manufacturing of your Peterbilt,
including advanced engineering techniques, rigid quality
control, and demanding inspections. These manufacturing
processes will be enhanced by you—the safe driver—
who observes the following:
• knows & understands how to operate a vehicle and all
its controls
• maintains the vehicle properly
• uses driving skills wisely
