There was a theft case in his village. The villagers organized a meeting to find out who was the thief. They asked the local magician who blamed the theft on Pradeep Behera and another man called Rama Biswal. When Pradeep said that he had not committed the theft the villagers called the police. The policemen slapped him on both cheeks and pulled him into the van. There they stroke him with fists. When they arrived at the police station at 2am they did not give him food. The next day they beat his hands with a stick. She and her husband Kabi Pradhan, aged 35, live in Nilacharka Nagar (Salia Sahi; P.S. Nayapally, Dist. Khurda). On 23 March 2008 at 10.30 pm Manju and her husband went to a shop in Basti, where they were blamed by the owner for breaking his glass showcase, which was in fact destroyed by himself due to alcohol abuse. After the shop owner insulted Manju and Kabi, he and his brother-in-law beat Kabi several times. On 24 March 2008 at 12 pm Manju went to Nayapally police station to lodge a complaint against the shopkeeper and his brother-in-law. The inspector in charge (IIC), Rajendra Prasad Behera, aged 45, did not believe Manju and began to abuse her in a filthy language. When Manju invited Rajendra to visit the place of crime, the IIC beat on the legs of her and told her to leave the police station. Shocked by these events Manju went home crying. FF Code : EU/OR/SNP/102/2008 Victim(s) : 1) Shankar Mahananda Perpetrator(s) : 1) Kumar Mishra, ASI Biramaharajpur PS Location : Biramaharajpur Date of incident : 19/03/2008 Case details: Victim Shankar Mahananda, aged 18, belongs to the Ganda Caste community and is a daily laborer. <strong>Orissa</strong> 162 On 19 March 2008 at 10.30 am Shankar and his friend Dambaradhar Suna were cycling on a road to get to Biramaharajpur. A motorbike approached from behind and tooted to signalize that Shankar should get on the side of the road to let the driver pass, which was not possible for Shankar due to a hole in the street. After the driver, Saroj Mishra, Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) at Biramaharajpur police station, had passed, he stopped in front of Shankar and Dambaradhar and blamed them of not having listened to his horn. Afterwards the ASI slapped and kicked Shankar so that he fell on the ground. After this incident Saroj Mishra went away with his motorcycle. Shankar and Dambaradhar continued their trip. Like his father and second victim Arakhit Haripal, aged 40, Sananda lives in Salepali (P.S. Dungaripally, Dist. Sonepur). On 21 March 2008 a dispute took place between Arakhit and his elder brother Sushil Haripal and both brothers scolded each other. On 22 March 2008 at 10.30 am Chakradhar Dash, Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) at Dungaripally police station, came to the house of Arakhit and Sananda where he threatened Arkhit, so that he would not insult his elder brother another time.
