On 27 October 2006, Sarmistha lodged an FIR at Bally PS on (General Diary No. 1968; FIR No.
308/06, dated 27 October 06) under ss. 143/325/342/506/294 IPC. The police did nothing to
arrest the perpetrators.
When newspapers publicised the incident, the police arrested Kishu Bhaduri, Rana Ganguli, and
one Kresnendu – but not others.
West Bengal
When the Chief Minister of West Bengal took an interest in the case and asked the police to arrest
the rest of the group (namely, Shankar Maitra, Rabi Bose, and Sudeb Guha), the police did so.
All six aggressors were later released on bail.

Victim Prativa Choudhury was a student.
On 8 May 2007, four men abducted Choudhury while she was walking home. The men gangraped
Choudhury. The men threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the rape. Choudhury
did not tell her family initially.
Choudhury suffered severe mental shock from the rape and became mute. On one occasion,
she unsuccessfully attempted to burn herself to death. Choudhury was subsequently hospitalised,
and on 12 May 2007, she told her family about the rape and her reasons for attempting suicide.
Choudhury’s family reported the rape to the police at Serampore PS and Bhawanipur PS. The
police ignored the family’s requests to record Choudhury’s statements.
On 13 May 2007, the police at Serampore PS lodged a criminal case against the rapists under
ss. 306/376/417 IPC. However, the case was only focused on one of the rapists. The police
refused to charge the other rapists, despite Choudhury’s family’s request.
On 20 May 2007, at 6:29pm, Choudhury died of her injuries.
