On 27 October 2006, Sarmistha lodged an FIR at Bally PS on (General Diary No. 1968; FIR No.<br />
308/06, dated 27 October 06) under ss. 143/325/342/506/294 IPC. The police did nothing to<br />
arrest the perpetrators.<br />
When newspapers publicised the incident, the police arrested Kishu Bhaduri, Rana Ganguli, and<br />
one Kresnendu – but not others.<br />
<strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong><br />
When the Chief Minister of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong> took an interest in the case and asked the police to arrest<br />
the rest of the group (namely, Shankar Maitra, Rabi Bose, and Sudeb Guha), the police did so.<br />
All six aggressors were later released on bail.<br />

Victim Prativa Choudhury was a student.<br />
On 8 May 2007, four men abducted Choudhury while she was walking home. The men gangraped<br />
Choudhury. The men threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the rape. Choudhury<br />
did not tell her family initially.<br />
Choudhury suffered severe mental shock from the rape and became mute. On one occasion,<br />
she unsuccessfully attempted to burn herself to death. Choudhury was subsequently hospitalised,<br />
and on 12 May 2007, she told her family about the rape and her reasons for attempting suicide.<br />
Choudhury’s family reported the rape to the police at Serampore PS and Bhawanipur PS. The<br />
police ignored the family’s requests to record Choudhury’s statements.<br />
On 13 May 2007, the police at Serampore PS lodged a criminal case against the rapists under<br />
ss. 306/376/417 IPC. However, the case was only focused on one of the rapists. The police<br />
refused to charge the other rapists, despite Choudhury’s family’s request.<br />
On 20 May 2007, at 6:29pm, Choudhury died of her injuries.
