rape Adhikari’s 18-year-old daughter. Sankar and other family members were also injured.
During the attack, Sabita’s sister reported the attack to the Maheshtala PS. Inspector-in-Charge
Mahapatra refused to receive the complaint and did not provide any assistance. In fact, two
police officers who drove by the property during the attack simply ignored it.
The Adhikari family lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police of South 24 Parganas.
After receiving pressure from the Superintendent, Maheshtala Inspector-in-Charge Mahapatra
finally registered Sabita’s complaint against the hired criminal and three other attackers. These
individuals were detained, but ultimately posted bail and have since continued to threaten the
Adhikari family with death. The hired criminal and his men are intimidating witnesses to the
attack.
West Bengal
On 14 October 2006, the police arrested Sankar in a false charge of a rape. The police officers
did not produce any memo of arrest. Later that night, Maheshtala PS police officer attempted to
arrest Sabita, but she escaped. The Maheshtala PS beat Sankar while he was in custody.
Sankar was transferred to Alipur jail after four days in custody.

On 16 January 2007, the hired criminal and his men again attempted to demolish the Adhikari
house. The Adhikari attempted to lodge a complaint with the Maheshtala PS, but were refused.
On 28 January 2007, the hired criminal and his men kidnapped Sankar’s father.
