Garai to experience mental problems during his incarceration. He underwent mental
treatment for several years and was diagnosed with depressive psychoses.
On 20 April 2005, Garai was transferred with his father and brother to Alipore Central
Jail.
On 21 October 2006, Garai was diagnosed with having suicidal tendencies and
consequently admitted to the Jail Hospital’s mental ward.
On 22 October 2006 at roughly 4:30am, Garai’s body was found in the Jail Hospital.
He allegedly hung himself to death with a prison cloth. At the time, there were five
other inmates in the same room.
Garai’s case was labelled by the Alipore PS as an Inquest Case (Unnatural death)
No. 120, dated 22 October 2006.
No judicial inquiry was conducted.

The victim Ranjit Kumar Biswas, aged about 70, was a dual citizen of Bangladesh and India.
On 1 May 2007, Ranjit and his family were trying to cross the border when Ranjit fell behind and
the other family members lost sight of him. They
approached the BOP for help. PCs Abbas Ali
Pradhan and B.N Beharaand, and Major Rabin
helped them locate Ranjit.
Thereafter, the BSF officials arrested the family.
They pleaded with the officials to find medical
assistance for Ranjit, as his condition had become
critical, but they refused. Ranjit became motionless
