Garai to experience mental problems during his incarceration. He underwent mental<br />

treatment for several years and was diagnosed with depressive psychoses.<br />

On 20 April 2005, Garai was transferred with his father and brother to Alipore Central<br />

Jail.<br />

On 21 October 2006, Garai was diagnosed with having suicidal tendencies and<br />

consequently admitted to the Jail Hospital’s mental ward.<br />

On 22 October 2006 at roughly 4:30am, Garai’s body was found in the Jail Hospital.<br />

He allegedly hung himself to death with a prison cloth. At the time, there were five<br />

other inmates in the same room.<br />

Garai’s case was labelled by the Alipore PS as an Inquest Case (Unnatural death)<br />

No. 120, dated 22 October 2006.<br />

No judicial inquiry was conducted.<br />

2007<br />

The victim Ranjit Kumar Biswas, aged about 70, was a dual citizen of Bangladesh and India.<br />

On 1 May 2007, Ranjit and his family were trying to cross the border when Ranjit fell behind and<br />

the other family members lost sight of him. They<br />

approached the BOP for help. PCs Abbas Ali<br />

Pradhan and B.N Beharaand, and Major Rabin<br />

helped them locate Ranjit.<br />

Thereafter, the BSF officials arrested the family.<br />

They pleaded with the officials to find medical<br />

assistance for Ranjit, as his condition had become<br />

critical, but they refused. Ranjit became motionless
