Some days later, when Biswajit called the Jainagar PS, the OC told him that he had Biswajit
Banerjee’s telephone number, and he would be called in case of any requirement. No action has
been taken.

Officer Somdeb Banerjee of the Jainagar PS has stated that Biswajit Banerjee used to take
various loans from various people and sold the same properties to multiple people – so the local
people did not like him. When asked about the police action with regard to these complaints,
Officer Somdeb Banerjee replied that the police called Biswajit Banerjee several times but he
never came.

Case Details:
Victrim Biswajit Mondal, age 35, was a farmer and also ran a shop. Mondal was a member of
a scheduled caste and lived in Mondal Papa in Hooghly District. The Balagarh PS is the local
police station. .
On 20 June 2007, at 8:00am, some individuals (hereinafter “the attackers”) threw two bombs into
Mondal’s shop. Mondal escaped and took shelter in a neighboring shop. The attackers entered
the neighboring shop and shot at Mondal four times. They also cut Mondal’s neck with a sharp
weapon. Mondal died from his injuries.

The Balagarh PS has not made any arrests and have been uncooperative in providing information
about the case.
