On 16 May 2007, the police of Doulatabad PS arrested Ektar Seikh in a criminal case u/s 363/ 366(a)/372/34 IPC (kidnapping and abduction for ransom), dated 15.05.07. On 17 May 2007, Ektar Seikh was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Baharampur, who sent him to Doulatabad PS, where he remained under police remand for five days. At the station, SIs Dulal Sarkar and Abdur Rahaman and ASIs Nitish Mondal and Asraf Ali beat Ektar Seikh. On 18 May 2007, the officers beat Ektar Seikh again.
When Ektar Seikh’s wife Rasida Bewa and brother went to the station with a former Gram Pradhan (Village Chief) and a present Gram Pradhan, they learned that Ektar Seikh had been badly beaten. They immediately requested the police not to beat Ektar Seikh, and pleaded his innocence. The police again produced Ektar Seikh before a court without waiting the five days as planned, because Ektar Seikh’s physical condition was poor. In court, Ektar Seikh described the abuse that the police had inflicted on him. The judge ordered an immediate report from Investigating Officer Abdur Rahaman. Ektar Seikh was then sent to Berhampore Central Jail. After a few days, when Rasida Bewa and Ektar Seikh’s other relatives went to the prison to meet him, he told them that he had been severely beaten at the police station. He also said that since he was not getting any treatment at the prison, he would die soon. He asked his relatives to secure his release. On 10 July 2007, the police of Doulatabad PS informed Ektar Seikh’s family that Ektar Seikh had been admitted to the Berhampore District Hospital in critical condition. His family members rushed to the Hospital and found Ektar Seikh lying unconscious on a bed. On 11 July 2007, Ektar Seikh died at the Hospital. A post-mortem examination was conducted. OC Jaydip Chakraborty has stated that no one amongst his staff was responsible for Ektar’s death.
