Again, Mondal’s brother attempted to lodge a complaint against the BSF Officers with the<br />

Raninagar PS, but SI Ramakanta Sarkar and another police officer refused to accept the<br />

complaint. Sarkar and the other officer also verbally abused Mondal’s family.. Sarkar also<br />

defended the BSF Officers actions and falsely claimed that Mondal was a cattle smuggler.<br />

Mondal’s brother also tried to lodge a complaint with the Raninagar PS over the phone, but he<br />

was told that he had to lodge the complaint with SI Rajat Das of Raninagar PS. However, two<br />

Raninager SIs refused to take the complaint when Mondal’s brother went to the station.<br />

On 23 November 2006, the BSF Officer filed a complaint against Mondal’s brother.<br />

On 6 December 2006, Mondal’s brother sent a written complaint to the Superintendent of Police,<br />

and sent a copy to the District Magistrate of Murshibad, but no action has been taken.<br />

On 23 November 2006, at 5:00am, victim Akhil Mondal, a sharecropper, was returning from the<br />

land that he worked. However, Border Security Force (BSF) Officers shot Mondal, and he died<br />

instantly. The BSF Officers shot Mondal in the back, and the bullet pierced through his left ear<br />

and emerged from his right eyebrow. There were three eyewitnesses to the killing.<br />

Mondal’s brother attempted to lodge a complaint with the Raninagar PS but the officer on duty<br />

refused to accept it.<br />

At the Lalbagh Hospital, the on-duty doctor failed to ascertain the cause of death and sent the<br />

body to another hospital. The body was returned to the Lalbagh Hospital, but then sent to a third<br />

hospital. Finally, 80 hours after the killing, an autopsy was performed.<br />
