Case Details:<br />

POs of Barna PS directed POs of Nowda PS to arrest Hari Bagdi on the allegations of being a<br />

Maoist activist and involved in Nandigram massacre. On 20 th September 2007, the police went<br />

to Hari Bagdi’s home, but did not find him. Police entered and ransacked the house. Without a<br />

memo of arrest, the police arrested victim Ajoy Bagdi and assaulted his father during the raid.<br />

The police took Ajoy Bagdi to Nowda PS.<br />

There, police detained Ajoy Bagda for 14 to 15 days. Finally, Ajoy was produced before the CJM<br />

Court, and was then remanded to police custody for 7 days. During his period of remand, the<br />

police tortured Ajoy. After 7 days, Ajoy was again produced before the court. Ajoy was sent to<br />

Berhampore Central Correctional Home.<br />

On 22 nd November 2007, Ajoy was found hanging from a tree inside the Berhampore Central<br />

Correctional Home. The case was registered as an unnatural death.<br />

Ajoy Bagdi’s wife Fultusi Bagdi lodged a complaint with the SP of Berhampore Central Correctional<br />

Home alleging that Ajoy could not have committed suicide, and that the Jail authorities were<br />

involved in his death. The local people of the Ajoy’s village state that Ajoy Bagdi was a poor<br />

labourer and was not involved with Maoist activists.
