Victim Paresh Chandra Mondal was a fisherman who was fishing at the Padma River. While<br />
returning home, he witnessed two smugglers trying to smuggle buffaloes with the help of some<br />
BSF police. Suddenly, an officer from the District Intelligence Bureau (DIB) arrived. The<br />
smugglers hid the buffaloes and fled from the place.<br />
The DIB Officer caught Paresh and struck him, causing him to fall down. He DIB Officer beat<br />
Paresh on his waist with his baton. Other fishermen who had accompanied Paresh were also<br />
beaten. The DIB Officer stole some fish, then released Paresh and the others.<br />
Paresh became sick after returning home. There were swellings on the right side of his face and<br />
a bluish mark in his left buttock. He was taken to a PHC and later referred to the GH. But owing<br />
to his poor economic condition he couldn’t continue his treatment process.<br />

2007<br />
On 19 October 2007, police officers of the Chinsurah PS fired tear gas shells into a protesting<br />
crowd. One of the police officers’ shells struck victim Namita Bag, age 42, as she was feeding<br />
her goat inside her house. Bag was knocked unconscious. A haystack inside Bag’s house<br />
also caught fire.<br />
Again, on 4 February 2007, the police fired a tear gas shell which struck her house and burned<br />
another haystack.
