On 19 October 2007, fifty to sixty members of the Krishi Jami Banchao Committee were
protesting against the acquisition of farming land for the Tata Small Car Project. With them, they
had choppers, crowbars, sickles, axes, and other weapons.
At 9.00am, around 200 armed officers from Chinsurah PS, and between 25 and 50 armed
officers from Singur PS led by SI Priyabrata Baksi, arrived and fired tear gas carelessly into the
gathering.

At the same time, some farmers – including victim Bidyut Kumar Manna – were working in
nearby fields. One tear gas canister hit Bidyut Kumar Manna’s back, causing him a serious
injury. Namita Das was also injured.
The next day, Bidyut Kumar Manna was treated by Dr. R.N. Sarkar at the Medical Camp
organized by Majdur Kranti Parisad at Barabari East.
On 25 November 200, Dr. R.N. Sarkar certified that Bidyut Kumar Manna had been suffering
from medical injury caused by a tear gas cell and was under his treatment.
On 27 November 2007, Bidyut Kumar Manna lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of
Police, Chinsurah, Hooghly. No action was taken.

Case details:
Victim Bipul Banik is a vegetable seller. He lives with his wife Chhaya Banik and his sons
Chadan and Kajol Banik. Chandan Banik is preparing for his Bachelor’s of Commerce. Kajol
Banik is a known antisocial.
In February 2006, OC Arundhiti Chowdhury and other officers forcefully entered the house of
victim in order to arrest Kajol. Kahol was not home, so the officers ransacked the house, and
beat and arrested Chandan Banik.
