On 13 August 2007, the Jail Authority sent Giasuddin Mondal to R.G. Kar Medical College and<br />

Hospital because his condition became critical as he was bleeding and crippled with pain. He<br />

was operated on at 12.00am; after his operation he returned to the Jail.<br />

On 3 October 2007, Giasuddin Mondal was granted bail. He was released the next day.<br />

After his release, Giasuddin Mondal’s physical condition became very bad: he was almost<br />

maimed and he was unable to resume his normal activity.<br />

The Committee of Protection of Democratic Rights took up Giasuddin Mondal’s case and<br />

organised a protest meeting with the local people against police torture. The Committee as well as<br />

Giasuddin Mondal himself lodged a complaint with State Human Rights Commission on 29<br />

August 2007. Complaints were also sent to the Chairman of the NHRC, the District Magistrate of<br />

North 24 Parganas, the SP of North 24 Parganas, the Principal Secretary of the Home Department<br />

(<strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong>), the Chief Secretary of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong>, and the Governor of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Bengal</strong>.<br />

Giasuddin Mondal received only one acknowledgement letter, from the office of the NHRC and<br />

dated 16.10.2007. He received no other replies from the State administration vis-à-vis his<br />

search for justice against those who abused him.<br />
