On 5 October 2007 at around 4.00pm, when Subodh Kumar Sarma was sitting in front of his house, two unknown men arrived on a motorcycle and asked his name. While he was responding, they began to punch him. The men trespassed into the house, ransacked it and took Rs. 2,000 Subodh Sarma was badly injured and was admitted to the T.L. Jaiswal Hospital for medical treatment. According to the medical report, he had several cut injuries all over his body. After he was discharged from the hospital, Subodh Kumar Sarma lodged a General Diary Entry (No. 490) at Bally PS. After two or three days, some unknown persons came to Subodh Kumar Sarma’s house and threatened him to withdraw the case. Subodh Kumar Sarma suspected that the persons might be police personnel, but when he went to the station, the officers there denied it. Subodh Kumar Sarma’s aunt has supported his suspicions, adding that SI Sujit Roy had been pressuring Subodh Kumar Sarma and his family withdraw the case. Case Details: FF Code : W.B./MON (Gopen Ch. On 12 th July 2007 at about 2.00am, while Sarzina Bibi was sleeping, OC Sunoyan Bosu came to her house with other officers in order to search for Selim Sheikh, who was absent.
The OC insulted Sarzina Bibi and threatened to arrest her in place of her husband. Then the OC tried to take away Sarzina Bib’s cows and asked for the key to Selim Sheikh’s motorcycle. He absconded for more than a year from a criminal case at the Uttapara PS. On 14 May 2007 at around 11.00pm, six policemen, including PI Kabir Kumar Roy (who was in civilian clothes) entered Bipul Banik’s house and broke into his room. The policemen demanded to see Bipul Banik’s eldest son Kajol and ransacked the room. The PI threatened Bipul Banik with ongoing harassment if Kajol did not surrender within a day. On 16 May 2007 at around 1.30am, six policemen, including the PI, returned to Bipul Banik’s house. They again insulted Bipul Banik and his family and arrested Bipul Banik without showing a warrant or a memo. They forced Chaya and Sajal Banik out of the house and locked the house behind them. At the police station, officers forced Bipul Banik to sign a blank paper and two other forms. Bipul Banik was not sent to the court, instead being detained at the station. At around 11.00am, Chaya Banik came to the station, but the police ignored her requests to release Bipul Banik. The District Human Rights Monitor for Hooghly went to the station. There, Duty Officer R. Chatterjee told him that the police had not arrested Bipul Banik, but rather brought him to the station for an enquiry. The Duty Officer would not say anything else. At 9.00pm, Chaya Banik returned to the station, but the police personnel there treated her badly. On 17 May 2007 at around 11.00am, Bipul Banik was sent to the Serampore Court.
