Case Details:
Victim Kanika Ghosh was married on 28 February 2007.
Ghosh’s father-in-law told her that he was a police officer and demanded 1 lakh more of
additional dowry or he threatened to marry his son off for a second time.
On 15 May 2007, at 8:30am Ghosh was found dead and hanging from a ceiling fan. Some of
the local residents told the Habra PS police officers that Ghosh’s husband and his family had
beat Ghosh, killed her, and then hung her from the ceiling fan. However, the Habra PS police
officers did not investigate those accusations, and instead pursued a suicide case.
According to Ghosh’s father, Basanti PS SI Amio Kanti Ghosh has tried to influence the creation
of a false post mortem report.

Case Details:
Victim Lovely Mondal, age 14, is the daughter of Jilal Mondal, a poor farmer from Jotkanai
village. Jotkani is under Domkal PS in Murshidabad district. A few days before 26 August 2006,
Tiarul Islam relayed a marriage proposal for Miss Mondal to her father through Sahidul Islam.
Mr. Mondal did not accept the proposal. On 26 August 2006, Miss Mondal returned home from
school and went to play with her brother. She did not return. Mr. Mondal and Hanufa Bibi went to
search for their daughter at Tiarul and Saihidul Islam’s house. However, neither was at home.
