At around 3.30pm, Aparna Chatterjee’s family reached the Hospital, but were made to wait until<br />

At around 8.05pm, Aparna Chatterjee succumbed to her injuries.<br />

Meanwhile, some of Aparna Chatterjee’s family members rushed to Biswajit Chatterjee’s house<br />

to learn what had happened. There, they saw that the stove that had allegedly exploded was in<br />

fact intact, and found the burnt remains of a cotton saree.<br />

On 25 July 2006 at around 6.15pm, Kanai Chakroborthy lodged a complaint at the Bantra PS. A<br />

case was registered u/s 498A/304B/34 IPC and u/s 3/4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.<br />

The police arrested Biswajit Chatterjee, but have done nothing against the other alleged perpetrators.<br />

On 26 July 2006 at around 1.00pm, one of Apama Chatterjee’s relatives received an anonymous<br />

and threatening phone call from telephone number 32913275. He lodged a complaint at the<br />

Dasnagar Thana PS, which the police recorded as General Diary No. 1052. No action was<br />

taken.<br />

Kanai Chakroborthy requested the Bantra Police to provide him with a copy of the post-mortem<br />

report and the Magisterial Inquest. No action has been taken.<br />

Victim Archana Ganguly lived with her children, as well as with her daughter-in-law Godhuli,<br />

whose father was the Local Secretary of the CPI(M) party. For six months, Godhuli verbally<br />

abused and insulted Archana Ganguly.<br />

On 13 May 2007, while Archana Ganguly’s children were away, Godhuli came to Archana<br />

Ganguly’s room, locked the door, beat her, throttled her, and threatened to murder her.<br />

Hearing Archana Ganguly’s groans, some neighbours came to her rescue. Godhuli resisted<br />

their interference, but eventually the neighbours prevailed. They brought Archana Ganguly to the
