2007, Sadique attacked Anwara while she was pregnant, beating her in the abdomen. Anwara
took shelter at her mother’s house and told her family about the abuse. On 3 May 2007, Anwara
attempted to lodge a complaint against her in-laws at the PS, but they would only make a record
in the General Diary.
Anwara’s family attempted to settle the matter with her in-laws, but the in-laws threatened them
and refused to meet. On 10 July 2007, Anwara’s family submitted a written complaint to the
police about their failure to act on the matter. Anwara then went to the PS, where the police sent
her to a women’s cell and tried to persuade her to resolve the matter with Sadique. Mr. Sasanko
Chakraborty, the Officer-in-Charge of the local PS and duty officer Mr. S. Biswas repeatedly
have refused to act on Anwara’s case.
Case Detail:
On 30 January 2004, victim Aparna Chatterjee, age 21, married Biswajit Chatterjee. Her family
provided a large dowry, but soon Biswajit Chatterjee’s family started to demand more. Aparna
Chatterjee’s father Kanai Chakroborthy arranged to provide an additional Rs. 35,000.
Biswajit Chatterjeee’s family suggested that Aparna Chatterjee starve or kill herself. Aparna
Chatterjee also received phone calls threatening her death unless she secured more money
form her family.
At some point, Aparna Chatterjee’s brother-in-law Padu Chatterjee made an indecent advance
toward her, and is alleged to have written down his demands of her.
Aparna Chatterjee approached Bantra PS and tried to lodge a complaint. The officers in station,
instead of recording her complaint, turned down her request and sent her back. It is alleged that
in the process the police officers also tried to make a joke of Aparna’s situation by blaming her
for what she was facing.
On 24 July 2006 at around 2.00pm, Bhaksar Roy, a neighbour of Kanai Chakroborthy, received
an anonymous telephone call informing him that Aparna Chatterjee had suffered serious burns
from an accident and had been admitted to the SSKM Hospital.
