In January 2006, Das’ relative took Das away to Faridabad. On 15 May 2006, Das’ husband
went to Faridibad and assaulted Das and tried to kill her by throttling her. Das escaped to a
neighbor’s house. Das’ husband and in-laws continued to threaten her over the telephones and
with text messages.
Das registered a FIR with the Inspector-in-Charge of the Bantra PS, but no action has been
taken.

Case Details:
On 1 June 2007, at around 1:15am, four individuals (hereinafter “the attackers”) were involved
in the stabbing of victim Amrul Sheikh in his bedroom. Sheikh’s mother found him in his room
with a sharp weapon still stuck in his abdomen. She also saw the four attackers running away
carrying sickles. Sheikh’s family followed the attackers and watched them climbing over a wall
with the sickles in their hands. Sheikh’s family was able to identify the attackers.
At 1:40am, Sheikh died.
At 6:00am, Jalangi PS Officer-in-Charge Somenath Bandopadhyay came to Sheikh’s house
and forced his family to register a complaint solely according to his direction. The family did not
consent to what was written in the complaint. A murder case was registered that was drafted by
the police. Sheikh’s brother merely signed the document and had no other input into its creation.
Only two of the attackers were named as suspects. One of the attackers was arrested, but later
released on bail.
Sheikh’s family asked the Officer-in-Charge Bandopadhyay on several occasions to register
their version of the complaint, but he refused. The family also sent their complaint to the
Superintendent of Police of Berhamnpore, but no action was taken.
