Case Details:
Victim Sahana Banu Siddique lives with her nephew, age 15, in Naikuli, Munshirhat,
Jagadballavpur. She had disputes with all her relatives for several reasons, and she patiently
put up with their abuses – which included throwing a dead cock or duck into her house, breaking
windows, and throwing stones. Her relatives occupied a piece of land that she owned and would
not allow her to sell it. On a few occasions, Sahana Banu Siddique protested, but her relatives
threatened her with weapons including choppers, and even threatened to kill her.
On 24 September 2007 in the morning, there was clash between Sahana Banu Siddique and
her relatives. Sahana awoke to hear her relatives hitting her window with a heavy roller. They
asked her to remove immediately a pool of stagnant water at the location where they were living.
Sahana Banu Siddique told them to hire somebody to do the job and that she would bear the
costs. On hearing this, her relatives rushed into her house, beat her, and demanded that she
remove the water. One relative locked herself in Sahana Banu Siddique’s room.
On 25 September 2007, Sahana Banu Siddique lodged a diary at the local police station, but the
police did not take any step against her relatives.
Sahana Banu Siddique has been ill and has not recovered from the shock and stress. She is
undergoing medical treatment.
