Khatun’s father told police officers at the Chanditala PS that, three
days before the killing, two men had made threats to Khatun’s
brother that they would kill the Khatun family. Based on this information,
the police arrested the two men and kept them in police
custody for four days. However, they were released before being
produced to any court. The two men have a very good relationship
with the Chanditala PS.
Chanditala PS Officer-in-Charge Tapasbrati Chakraborty locked
up Khatun’s father and his son-in-law for three days and released
them on the condition that they visit the Chanditala PS regularly.
Case Details:
Victim Shri Krishnapada Sardar’s son attended school at Amritnagar High School in the area of
Amtali.
On 25 July 2005, Sardar was informed that his son was grievously ill. When he arrived at the
school, he found his son dead and wrapped in paper.
The school’s principal said that Sardar’s son had drowned, and he provided a death certificate.
However, when Sardar inspected his son’s body, the body appeared to be substantially
decomposed. The body’s condition led Sardar to believe that his son had died much earlier
than what he had been told. The principal told Sardar and his wife that they would face dire
consequences if they contacted the local police. Sardar and his wife were not permitted to meet
their son’s hostel superintendent.
Sardar and his wife lodged a complaint with the Gosaba PS. However, the Gosaba PS took no
subsequent action. Sardar and his wife also lodged a complaint with the Canning PS, but, again,
no follow-up action was taken. Sardar also lodged complaints with the West Bengal Human
Rights Commission and the Sub-Divisional Police officer of the local area, but no tangible results
were realized. .
