medical facilities. On 3 rd April 2008 the prisoners were produced before the court and the magistrate was
surprised on seeing the physical condition of the prisoners, and issued a show cause notice to the SP.
Samir Sarkar, the Superintendent appeared before the Court on 4 th April 2008. The magistrate warned
him to be careful in future. After this the victim was subjected to severe torture for bringing the incident of
custodial torture into public knowledge. Now the victims are afraid to tell anything about their condition in
the jail.

Case Details:
Victim Tufan Das, aged 24, is a resident of Bachar Para. He had a love affair with Kuheli Das of Ghari
Beria for many years. The family members of Kuheli didn’t agree with this relationship, though Kuheli
was an adult claiming herself 20 years of age. They decided to get married in the month of January
2008. Accordingly Kuheli came from her house in a motor cycle and both got married on 10 th January
2008. But on 12 th January 2008 Kuheli’s father forcibly took his daughter from the house of the victim and
registered a false case against Tufan at Thakur Pukur Police Station. Thus six to seven policemen
came to the house of Tufan on 14 th January 2008 and carried him to the station neither producing the
arrest memo nor stating the reason for arrest to his family members. The officials also harassed the
victim’s mother and sister. Tufan was produced before the Court the same day. On 25 th January 2008
he was again produced before the court but he was denied bail.
