Police Station. But the OIC of the station just filed a general diary entry. The Association gave a written<br />
complaint to the Joint Commissioner of Police demanding action against the negligent police. The matter<br />
was taken up by the media, following which the Association withdrew their support owing to their political<br />
influence. The victim was badly injured and is mentally depressed after this incident.<br />

Victim Rupa Roy, aged 33 is a resident of Gopalpur village of Kolkata. She was married to Santanu Roy<br />
on 14 th August 1999. Right from 2006 the victim has been residing in her mother Bakul Biswas’s house,<br />
because Santanu Roy had an illegal affair with Jhuma Naskar, W/o Amal Naskar, a police official. Rupa<br />
also has a 7 year old daughter who stays along with her. During November 2007 Santanu came to her<br />
house and stole some articles. The victim went to lodge a complaint at Zinzira Bazar Police Station but<br />
her complaint was refused, owing to the political influence of Amal Naskar. On 6 th January 2008 Santanu<br />
came to Rupa’s house once again and forced her to sign on a divorce paper. Rupa’s mother is a heart<br />
patient and thus she became ill hearing this. On 8 th January 2008 Rupa went to Zinzira Bazar Investigation<br />
centre to lodge a complaint but the Officer on duty abused her with filthy words before filing the complaint.<br />
Again Rupa’s husband came home on 26 th January 2008 and tried to take her daughter forcibly. He<br />
also threatened to ransack the house and abduct her along with her daughter. The victim and her<br />
mother have not lodged a complaint out of their fear towards the police. The economic condition of Rupa<br />
is also very poor and she has no sufficient money to go to Maheshtala Police Station and lodge a<br />
complaint.<br />

Victim Sabeda Bbi, aged 35, is a daily wage labourer, residing in Shibdaspur, falling under the jurisdiction<br />
of Naihati Police Station. The victim is the bread winner of the family for her husband Sheikh Moslem is<br />
physically challenged. On 19 th June 2007 Sabeda was arrested by Muchipara Police for no cause.<br />
They were clad in civilian attire, and denied telling the reason for arrest. The officials neither issued a<br />
memo of arrest not informed the family members about the arrest, thereby violating the D.K. Basu<br />
