Case Details:<br />
Sridharnagar village falls under Bada area of Sunderban, where there is no source of cultivation<br />
throughout the year. Hence the resident of the village went outside in search of job. The Sardars are rich<br />
people who assured these poor villagers to get job on contract. Thus 13 poor people of the village<br />
worked for few days in Bhola Sankar Alu Store; but ultimately they were ditched by the Sardars, who<br />
refused to pay the salary. A meeting was called to talk on the issue at the village level, but the Sardars<br />
lodged a complaint at Pathapratima Police Station, stating wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, cheating<br />
and dishonesty. The victims hid themselves when they knew that police were searching for them. On 7 th<br />
April 2008 and 8 th April 2008 the OIC and SI of the station entered the house of 35 year old Nilima Giri,<br />
while the male members were away from home. They dragged her from the bed, pulled her sari, and<br />
struck her with their fists. The police didn’t spare the children also. Out of fear nobody dared to protest.<br />
The whole house was damaged. After this incident Nilima send a complaint to the SDPO, CI and OIC of<br />
Patharpratima Police Station. A case was also filed in the ACJM Court stating the criminal offences of the<br />
police.<br />

Victim Nimai Mondal, aged 40, is a farmer residing in Char Rajnagar village, falling under the jurisdiction<br />
of Raninagar Police Station. On 5 th April 2008, the victim was working in his field, and during that time a<br />
BSF official came near him, asking him to vacate the place, for there was a nuisance in the locality.<br />
Nimai denied going stating that he had some urgent work. The official grew angry at this and started<br />
dragging him. When the victim protested the official was enraged and beat up Nimai brutally. Nirmala<br />
Mondal, W/o Nimai rushed for help hearing her husband shout. The official pushed her down and beat<br />
her with the butt of the pistol. He also abused the victims with filthy words. Nimai was kicked on his chest<br />
