Case Details:
Victim Devjani Jha, aged 51, is a resident of Naresh Mitra Sarani, falling under the jurisdiction of
Bhawanipore Police Station. The victim is the proprietor of her business named ‘Global Link Consultants’,
and her husband Rakesh Jha ran another firm named ‘Sapphire Marine’. A client in Rakesh’s business
had lodged a complaint against him at Bhawanipore Police Station, over some dispute. Devjani was
also tagged in the case in spite of the fact that the victim was in no way connected to her husband’s
business. Rakesh got bail from the court on 13 th July 2008 and Devjani got bail the next day. The victim
duly informed Bhawanipore Police Station about the bail granted. Following this, Devjani was regularly
harassed by Joydeep Das, IO. He even advised the victim to stay away from her husband at her
parents’ house. On 20 th June 2008 he barged into the house of Devjani at midnight and pushed down the
servant maid. Thus the victim is facing occasional threats from the officer in the name of investigation.
Devjani filed a petition supported by an affidavit before the CJM Court, Alipore seeking appropriate relief.
Though she lodged complaints before several authorities everything was in vain.

Case Details:
All the above mentioned victims are citizens of Bangladesh, who came into India owing to their stringent
economic conditions. Victims Enayat, Soukat, Jahirul and Abdul were arrested by the officials of
Rabindranath Police Station on 29 th August 2006. They were produced before the CJM, Alipore and
sent to Alipore Correctional Home. The case was transferred to the 3 rd JM Court on 21 st November
2006 and they were produced before the magistrate. Victims Atiyar, Monjur, and Khokhon were arrested
by Gosaba Police on 2 nd July 2007, and produced before the CJM, Alipore. They too were sent to
Alipore Correctional Home. The case was transferred to the 1 st JM Court on 8 th September 2007 and
they were produced before the magistrate. Victim Sheik Masud was arrested by Kasba Police on 27 th
December 2006, and produced before the CJM, Alipore. He was also sent to Alipore Correctional
Home. In all the above cases, the victims’ period of detention is over but they are still languishing in
Alipore Correctional Home.
