Case Details:<br />

Victim Brindaban Sumar, aged 48 is a resident of Khedarpara village, falling under the jurisdiction of<br />

Gaighata Police Station. On 9 th July 2008 the victim was returning home from Banagram. On the way<br />

he was forced by few BSF Officials to load smuggled articles in a vehicle, following which he returned<br />

home. On 10 th and 11 th July 2008 the BSF Officials came to the house of the victim and inquired<br />

unnecessarily. On 12 th July 2008 Brindaban was arrested by two BSF Officials in the name of interrogation.<br />

The victim was struck with their fists and kicked with shod feet. He was dragged towards the camp. At<br />

Banagram Angrail BSF Camp, Brindaban was hanged upside down, and beaten on his legs, back and<br />

hip with batons. They also kicked him with shod legs. The victim sustained severe blood injuries.<br />

Having gained knowledge of this the village leaders came to the camp and got Brindaban released. He<br />

was set free after getting signed in a written paper. Later on the victim was admitted in Bongaon G.R.<br />

Dhar Sub Divisional Hospital and discharged after three days. There was a deep injury on his left leg,<br />

and still the victim suffers pain. He also developed hearing problem due to the beating. Brindaban’s wife<br />

lodged a complaint at Gaighata Police Station dated 12 th July 2008 and on 15 th July 2008 thes villagers<br />

also submitted a mass petition before the SDO of Bongaon. But the police denied taking any action.<br />

Finally after a petition was filed before the ACJM, the case was taken up by Gaighata Police Station on<br />

1 st August 2008. All the original documents of medical treatment were taken away by the police in the<br />

name of investigation. But till date the police haven’t arrested the perpetrators. Though Brindaban visited<br />

the police station regularly it was in vain.<br />

Sasadhar Palle and Pacheebala Palle have three sons and a daughter. The family resides in Shanti<br />

Nagar, falling under the jurisdiction of South Bidhan Police Station. Sasasdhar’s elder son Bablu,<br />

daughter Kajal Palle, and her husband Shyam Mondal were trying to evict the rest of the family from the<br />

property so as to be the sole proprietors. Five years back Bablu forcibly took Sasadhar to a field and<br />

tried to get his signature in a court paper. When the latter denied he was battered. The matter was<br />
