Victim Azizul Morol, aged 20, is a rag picker residing in Purbapara, falling under the jurisdiction of<br />
Rajarhat Police Station. On 15 th January 2008 the victim was as usual collecting rubbish along with<br />
Azan in Dumdum area. Their vans were standing behind a canal. All of a sudden a local resident caught<br />
them from behind, alleging them to be thieves. Azan stated that they were not the people they were<br />
searching for and assured to bring their fellowmen for witness. The people stationed Azizul and sent<br />
Azan to bring their fellowmen. Meanwhile Azizul was subjected to severe torture and handed over to<br />
Dumdum Police. The policemen beat him with a wooden stick, forcing him to get into the van. The victim<br />
was put behind the bars. At the time of arrest police neither issued any memo of arrest not informed his<br />
family members. Following this Azizul was sent to Ghughudanda Out-Post from where he was taken to<br />
Barrackpore Court on 16 th January 2008, after the medical examination. The victim was taken to the<br />
court with his hands cuffed. His bail was furnished from the court after giving Rs.1,400 to the lawyer. On<br />
17 th January 2008 Azizul went to recover his van but the officer on duty asked two liters of petrol for the<br />
police van, in order to visit Bediapara, where the van was stationed. Though Azizul submitted the<br />
documents his van wasn’t delivered. Now the victim is not able to continue work for his poor health<br />
condition. His X-Ray report states that his arms are fractured.<br />

Case Details:<br />
Victim Bapi Halder is a small businessman residing in Behala. He supplies goods to several shop<br />
keepers. A number of families live in the house of the victim as tenants. It was reportedly known that a<br />
minor girl had been raped by Bapi Halder. The matter was reported to Behala Police Station. On 29 th<br />
Nov. 2007 Behala Police came to the house of the victim and ransacked it. They also verbally abused<br />
his mother and sister using filthy words. Without giving any memo of arrest they dragged Bapi to the<br />
police station. The victim’s family had to pay Rs.1000 to the police officials to avoid torture on him during<br />
police custody. A case was filed against him & related medical examinations were done on him. During<br />
all this process the family members of the victim had to undergo mental torture from their neighbours,<br />
owing to which they vacated the house. The advocate of Bapi states that the house would be occupied<br />
by the tenants, and hence the police needs to help the family members to safely return to their house.<br />
