The family ran vegetable business and engaged some labourers to work in their field. Rausnara, a resident of the same village who worked there desired to marry Azan. She proposed before his father but was denied. The family members of the girl resorted to harsh means. A village meeting was called on the issue and Azan denied loving the girl. The family members of the girl beat him up at that time. At night Rausnara came to the house of the victim and the sister-in-law of Azan began chasing her with a broom. During this time the perpetrators arrived at the place and assaulted all the female members of the victim’s family. The BDO and a doctor named Saidul demanded the family of the victim to arrange for the marriage or pay a compensation of Rs.50,000. On 23 rd February 2006 Azan was kidnapped but he escaped the next day. In the meantime the perpetrators managed to get the signature of Majed in a blank paper as well as a stamped paper. On 7 th July 2006 Azan was again abducted but he ran away this time also. Finally the victimized family resorted to Deganga Police Station and a general diary entry was registered on 13 th July 2006. On 1 st August 2006 Gulhera, the sister-inlaw of Azan was arrested during midnight without any lady police escort. The police issued no memo of arrest. On 11 th August 2006 a written complaint was filed before the CI of Barasat, and on 14 th August 2006 a complaint was sent to the SP. A petition was also filed before the 1 st Civil Judge at Barasat. The Court restrained the perpetrators from entering the premises of the victims’ house. On 28 th November 2006 Asgar Ali, brother of Azan was arrested during midnight, and his wife was abused by the officials and pushed down tearing her blouse. The next day at the station, the OIC advised Rausnara to lodge a complaint against the family of the victim. Asgar was produced before Barasat Court and sent to jail custody. He was released on bail after 28 days. Azan was also arrested and released after 21 days of detention. On 26 th January 2007 police again came to the house of the victim to harass them. FF Code : W.B. / MON (Aditi Kar) DISTRICT – Kolkata/ Jan 28/01/2008/Sl.NO – 109 Victim(s) : Azizul Morol Perpetrator(s) : 1) Police 2) Local residents Location : Dumdum, North 24 Parganas Date of incident : 15/01/2008 Case Details: Victim Azizul Morol, aged 20, is a rag picker residing in Purbapara, falling under the jurisdiction of Rajarhat Police Station. On 15 th January 2008 the victim was as usual collecting rubbish along with Azan in Dumdum area. Their vans were standing behind a canal. All of a sudden a local resident caught them from behind, alleging them to be thieves. Azan stated that they were not the people they were searching for and assured to bring their fellowmen for witness. The people stationed Azizul and sent Azan to bring their fellowmen. Meanwhile Azizul was subjected to severe torture and handed over to Dumdum Police. The policemen beat him with a wooden stick, forcing him to get into the van. The victim was put behind the bars. At the time of arrest police neither issued any memo of arrest not informed his family members. Following this Azizul was sent to Ghughudanda Out-Post from where he was taken to Barrackpore Court on 16 th January 2008, after the medical examination. The victim was taken to the court with his hands cuffed. His bail was furnished from the court after giving Rs.1,400 to the lawyer. On 17 th January 2008 Azizul went to recover his van but the officer on duty asked two liters of petrol for the police van, in order to visit Bediapara, where the van was stationed. Though Azizul submitted the documents his van wasn’t delivered. Now the victim is not able to continue work for his poor health condition. His X-Ray report states that his arms are fractured. No - 131 Victim(s) : Bapi Halder Perpetrator(s) : Police Location : Behala PS, West Bengal Date of incident : 29/11/2007 Case Details: Victim Bapi Halder is a small businessman residing in Behala. He supplies goods to several shop keepers. A number of families live in the house of the victim as tenants. It was reportedly known that a minor girl had been raped by Bapi Halder. The matter was reported to Behala Police Station. On 29 th Nov. 2007 Behala Police came to the house of the victim and ransacked it. They also verbally abused his mother and sister using filthy words. Without giving any memo of arrest they dragged Bapi to the police station. The victim’s family had to pay Rs.1000 to the police officials to avoid torture on him during police custody. A case was filed against him & related medical examinations were done on him. During all this process the family members of the victim had to undergo mental torture from their neighbours, owing to which they vacated the house. The advocate of Bapi states that the house would be occupied by the tenants, and hence the police needs to help the family members to safely return to their house.
