Case Details:<br />

Victim Subrata Bhattacharya was a resident of Netaji Nagar Colony, falling under the jurisdiction of<br />

Jadavpur Police Station. He was married to Champa Bhattacharya and both have a 6 year old daughter.<br />

The victim was working in a factory, which was closed down for several years, owing to which he ran<br />

a small business for earning their livelihood. Subrata’s wife started a tea shop on the main road which<br />

too didn’t run well. Thus the family was spending their days in penury. Subrata asked his wife to go back<br />

to her father’s house, assuring to call back after arranging money. On 12 th April 2008 the victim was<br />

alone at home, and the next day also the door of the house remained shut. When the people of the locality<br />

broke open the door of the house they found the victim hanging on a rope. The SI of Jadavpur Police<br />

Station came to the spot and send the body to Bangur Hospital for post mortem. On 14 th April 2008 the<br />

nephew of the victim went to receive the body of Subrata, but the body was changed. The police in the<br />

meantime forcibly tried to put responsibility of the changing the dead body upon the victim’s family but<br />

they denied. A suit was filed before the ACJM, Alipore Court on 16 th April 2008, stating the breach created<br />

by the police. Subrata died on 13 th April 2008 but the cremation of the body was not completed even after<br />

a long time. The widow of the deceased is now leading a life of starvation.<br />

Case Details:<br />

Victim Sudipta Ghosh was a resident of Udayrampur village. He was a reputed teacher in the area, and<br />

was found missing from 9 th November 2007. The family members of Sudipta had suspicion on his<br />

neighbor, Partha Mukherjee, with whom the victim was last found talking. Accordingly his relatives<br />

lodged a missing diary and complaint against the suspect at Bishnupur Police Station on 16 th November<br />

2007. A report was also made before the CID on 13 th November 2007. But the police were negligent<br />

about the case, despite repeated requests. The family of the victim went to the police station from 18<br />
